Pack it light, tape it loosely enough to open by hand, write the address in large clear print, and call ahead so they know it is coming and do not have to rush to the door. The best gift parcel for an older relative is one they can open comfortably on their own, without scissors, a knife, or a struggle with tight tape.
Older hands often lack grip strength, and arthritis makes tight tape and knotted twine genuinely painful. Use a box that is not much bigger than the contents, so there is less packing to dig through. Tape the seams with one strip, not three overlapping layers, and leave a pull tab: fold the last centimetre of tape back on itself so there is a loose end to grab. Skip cable ties, shrink wrap, and inner boxes sealed with tape; a single layer of tissue paper protects most gifts just fine.
Keep the parcel light. A box that is awkward to lift from a porch or a mailbox can be a fall risk, so split a heavy gift into two lighter parcels rather than one dense box. If the gift itself is heavy, ship it to a family member nearby who can carry it in, and send your grandparent a card announcing it instead.
| Packing choice | Why it helps | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One strip of tape with a pull tab | Opens by hand, no knife needed | Triple-taped seams, cable ties |
| Light box, tissue wrap | Easy to lift and unpack | Heavy boxes, dense packing peanuts |
| Gift note on top | Seen first, sets the tone | Packing slips with prices inside |
| Large-print address and note | Readable without glasses hunting | Small handwriting, faint ink |
Signature on delivery sounds safer, but it can backfire: if your grandparent is out, napping, or slow to reach the door, the parcel goes back to a depot they may not be able to reach. A better setup is delivery to a safe place they choose, or delivery to a neighbour or family member who is home during the day. Tell the carrier in the delivery instructions, and tell your grandparent the plan, so a parcel left at a side door is expected, not a surprise.
Tracking helps you more than them. Watch the tracking yourself and call when it shows delivered, rather than asking them to check a tracking page. If the parcel shows delivered but they cannot find it, ask them to check the usual spots, porch, side door, mailbox, and with a neighbour, before you file a claim: most "missing" parcels turn up within a day.
Skip perishables unless you know the delivery timing is tight and someone will be home to refrigerate them. Never mail prescription medicines: that is restricted in both Canada and the US, and a pharmacy transfer is the safe route. Avoid gifts that need assembly with small tools, and avoid anything with a fiddly setup, such as a device that requires an app and an account before it works. A gift that needs a grandchild on the phone to set up is a chore disguised as a present.
Good choices are consumables they already enjoy, warm clothing in a size you know fits, large-print books, and photo prints. A handwritten letter inside the box often outshines the gift itself, and it costs nothing to add. If you are shipping within Canada, a Canada Post Xpresspost label up to 5 kg can be arranged through LetterAgent via your AI assistant: describe the parcel, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and print the PDF label.
Yes, and not just once. Call when you ship, to say what is coming and roughly when. Call when it is delivered, to talk them through opening it and to hear their reaction. That second call is the real gift for many grandparents: the parcel gives you a reason to talk, and the conversation is what they will remember after the contents are used up.
