Can I ship a package on a statutory holiday in Canada?

You can pack a parcel and buy a label on a statutory holiday, but Canada Post does not collect or deliver on federal statutory holidays, so the parcel starts moving on the next business day. Plan around that gap: drop the parcel off the business day before, or accept that delivery shifts by a day.

What actually stops on a statutory holiday?

On federal statutory holidays, Canada Post collection, delivery, and processing pause. Street letter boxes are not emptied, post offices are closed, and parcels sit where they are until the next business day. That pause applies across the country for federal holidays like New Year's Day, Canada Day, and Christmas Day. A label bought online on the holiday itself is still valid; it simply waits for the next working day to enter the system.

Provincial holidays are messier. Some holidays are observed in only one province or a few, like Family Day, which most provinces mark but not all, and the August civic holiday, which goes by different names and dates. A parcel can be collected in your province on a day that is a holiday in the recipient's province, then sit at the destination depot until that province reopens. Check both ends of the trip around long weekends.

Can I drop a parcel off on the holiday itself?

Usually not through a staffed counter, since post offices close. Some drop-off points inside stores or malls may be open, but the postal counter inside them is typically closed, and a parcel left there will not be collected until the next business day. Street drop boxes for letters are also not emptied on the holiday. Packing the parcel and printing the label on the holiday is useful preparation; the trip itself starts the next business day.

How should I time a parcel around holidays?

Send it at least one business day before the holiday if the delivery date matters. Around Christmas and New Year, when several holidays cluster, send several days early, because volumes are high and depots are full. Tell the recipient when to expect the parcel, so it does not sit on a porch over a long weekend after delivery. Heat-sensitive and perishable items deserve extra care here: a parcel that sits over a long weekend in summer heat can spoil.

Delivery promises count business days, not calendar days, so a holiday in the middle of a trip adds a day to the expected arrival. If a parcel was due in three business days and a holiday falls in between, expect four calendar days at least. If the parcel stays within Canada and under 5 kg, you can get a Canada Post Xpresspost label by asking your AI assistant: you approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and get a label PDF to print and attach.

What about couriers on holidays?

Private couriers set their own holiday schedules, which do not always match Canada Post. Some run limited service on days Canada Post closes, and some close on provincial holidays Canada Post still works. If a courier option matters for a holiday shipment, confirm that carrier's holiday hours directly rather than assuming they match the post office. For a Canada Post label, the federal holiday calendar is the one that counts.
