Yes, you can ship a candle in Canada and the US: candles are not hazardous goods, so no special dangerous-goods paperwork is needed. Pack each candle upright in its own sealed bag, cushion it well, and avoid shipping in summer heat, since melted wax is the main risk, not breakage.
Many new candle sellers assume a candle counts as flammable goods. It does not, in its finished form: a solid candle with a wick is not classed as hazardous cargo by Canada Post or US carriers. The exceptions are liquid fuel, loose wicks soaked in accelerant, or candles shipped with a lighter or matches in the same parcel, which change the picture. A plain candle on its own ships as an ordinary parcel.
Wrap the candle in tissue or bubble wrap first, to guard the surface and the scent. Then put it in a sealed plastic bag or a zip bag. This bag is the most important step for jar candles and pillar candles alike: if wax softens in transit, the bag keeps it off everything else in the box. Ship jar candles upright, lid on, so the lid cannot work loose and let wax or fragrance oil escape.
Protect the wick. A bent or broken wick is the most common candle complaint after shipping, and it happens when candles are packed loose and roll around. Wrap the top of the candle, or place a small cardboard cap over the wick, before the outer wrap goes on. For taper candles, wrap each one alone and pack them in a rigid tube or a box with dividers, so they cannot snap.
| Candle type | Packing notes | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Jar candle | Upright, lid on, sealed bag, bubble wrap | Broken glass, leaked fragrance oil |
| Pillar candle | Wrap alone, sealed bag, cushion on all sides | Dents and scuffs on the wax surface |
| Taper candle | Wrap alone, rigid tube or dividers | Snapped stems |
| Tea lights and votives | Keep in original cups or trays, bag the group | Crushed cups, scattered wax |
Heat is the real enemy of a shipped candle. Wax softens well below the temperature of a parked delivery truck in July, and a candle that softens and re-hardens can arrive with a dented top, a tilted wick, or a cloudy surface. In summer, ship early in the week, choose the fastest service you can justify, and add insulation around the candle. If a heat wave is forecast, holding the parcel for cooler weather beats replacing a ruined candle.
In winter, candles travel well. Cold makes wax firmer, not weaker, though a jar candle taken from a freezing porch straight into a warm room can sweat condensation on the glass. Tell the recipient to let the candle reach room temperature before lighting it, and to trim the wick if transit bent it.
Yes, in most cases, with the usual customs declaration. Describe the contents plainly as candles, with their quantity and value, on the customs form. Some countries restrict certain fragrance ingredients or require ingredient lists for imported cosmetics and scented goods, so a scented candle going overseas deserves a quick check of the destination rules. Within Canada and the US, no such extra step applies.
One cross-border note: a candle shipped with a gift set that includes matches or a lighter becomes a different shipment. Keep lighters and matches out of candle parcels entirely.
For a single inexpensive candle, insurance rarely pays: the premium and the claim effort can exceed the candle's value. For a large order, a wholesale case, or a limited-edition candle, insurance makes sense, and photos of the packing help a claim. Keep in mind that carriers may not cover heat damage the same way they cover breakage, so read the coverage terms for melt-related claims before relying on them.
Yes, within the service limits. LetterAgent provides Canada Post Xpresspost shipping labels for parcels within Canada, up to 5 kg. You ask your AI assistant for a label, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and receive a label PDF. A case of jar candles can pass 5 kg fast, so weigh the finished parcel first. Parcels over 5 kg and shipments outside Canada need another carrier.
