Yes. Online mailing services print your letter and take it to the post office for you, and you get the same USPS tracking number and proof of mailing you would get in person. LetterAgent works this way for letters to US and Canadian addresses, with a registered option that adds US Certified Mail or Canada Registered Mail tracking and proof of delivery.
The service does the post office trip for you. You provide the letter text and the recipient's address; the service prints it, puts it in an envelope, pays the certified mail postage, and hands it to USPS. From that moment the letter is ordinary certified mail traveling through the same network as a letter you mailed yourself. The proof you receive is generated by USPS, not by the online service, which is why it counts the same.
The part worth understanding is that "certified" describes proof, not speed. A certified letter moves through the same first-class stream as a regular letter; the extra fee buys the tracking number and the delivery record, not faster handling. If you need proof of mailing today and do not care about tracking, a USPS Certificate of Mailing from a counter is the cheaper route. If you need proof of delivery without visiting a post office, online certified mail is the point of the service.
That depends on which receipt option you choose, and the choice matters more than most people realize:
| Receipt option | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking only | A USPS tracking number with delivery scans | No signature record, but proof of delivery exists |
| Electronic return receipt | Signature record delivered to you digitally | Usually costs less and arrives faster than the paper card |
| Physical green card | The classic signed postcard mailed back to you | It travels back through the mail, so it can take a while to reach you |
Two non-obvious points here. First, the physical green card is the slowest piece of the whole process: after delivery it is mailed back to the sender like ordinary mail, so people who needed proof "this week" are sometimes still waiting on the card long after the letter arrived. Electronic return receipt exists precisely to avoid that wait. Second, some statutes and court rules specifically name the physical green card as the required proof. If you are mailing because a law told you to, check what the law actually requires before choosing the electronic option.
Yes, with one caveat. Once the letter is in the USPS system as certified mail, it is indistinguishable from a certified letter mailed at a counter. The tracking, the delivery scans, and the return receipt all come from USPS. No court, agency, or landlord can tell or cares how the letter got to the post office.
The caveat is about special cases. Some legal procedures require you to show the certified mail receipt itself, stamped at a post office counter on a particular day. Online services provide the USPS-generated proof, but if your situation involves a strict statutory deadline, read the statute rather than assuming. For the overwhelming majority of uses, demand letters, contract notices, landlord correspondence, proof of mailing for your records, online certified mail is fully equivalent.
LetterAgent offers a registered option on letters: US Certified Mail for US addresses, Canada Registered Mail for Canadian addresses. You describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and the letter is printed and mailed with the registered service, which adds tracking and proof of delivery. Recipients must have a US or Canadian address; you as the sender can be anywhere. The letter itself is 8.5x11, single-sided, in a double-window envelope: no inserts, no extras, just the letter.
One honest limitation, shared by every certified mail option: certified mail proves delivery of the envelope, not what was inside it. If the contents might be disputed later, keep an exact dated copy with the tracking number written on it.
