PO Boxes rent in 3, 6, or 12-month terms, and you can renew up to 30 days before your term ends without losing any time. After expiry there is a 10-day grace period, and after that the box can be closed and its mail returned. Auto-renew with a card on file avoids the whole scramble.
Any time from 30 days before the expiry date. Renewing early does not shorten your term: the new term is measured from the old expiry date, not from the day you pay. So paying three weeks early buys you zero lost days and one less thing to forget. You can renew online through your USPS account, at the self-service kiosk if your post office has one, or at the counter. The online route is the only one that works at midnight on a Sunday, which is when most people remember.
| Timing | What happens |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 days before expiry | Renew for 3, 6, or 12 months. New term starts at the old expiry date, so nothing is lost. |
| On or just after the expiry date | You are in the 10-day grace period. Renew now and keep the same box. |
| After the 10-day grace period | The box can be closed and reassigned. Remaining mail is returned to sender. You may have to reapply from scratch. |
It is a short cushion, not an extension. During those 10 days your mail keeps arriving and the box stays yours, but the clock is running. If you pay during the grace period, the renewal is backdated to the expiry date, so the term is unbroken. If you do not, the post office can close the box, change the lock, and offer it to the next person on the waiting list. Mail addressed to a closed box is returned to sender marked as undeliverable, and there is no forwarding to your home address unless you set up a separate change of address.
Opt into automatic renewal on your USPS account with a credit card on file, and USPS charges the next term before the old one ends. This is the safest option for anyone whose box address appears on business stationery, licenses, or tax forms, because a lapsed box that gets reassigned can send your mail into a stranger's hands. If you move or no longer need the box, cancel auto-renew and close the box properly, returning the keys.
Renewal keeps your current box and number. If you need a bigger size or a different post office, that is a change request, not a renewal, and it depends on availability. Many post offices have waiting lists for popular sizes, so ask early rather than waiting for your term to end. Your box number is not guaranteed to carry over to a different size at the same location.
