Mail Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the IRS address listed in its instructions. Every transcript type is free. If you only need the tax return transcript (not the account version), the shorter Form 4506-T-EZ works. For a full photocopy of a filed return, you need Form 4506 instead, and that one carries a per-year processing fee.
This is general information, not tax advice.
A transcript is a computer printout of your return information, not a photocopy of the return itself. It shows most line items from the return as originally filed, and it is free. A tax account transcript goes one step further: it also shows changes that you or the IRS made after filing, such as payments and adjustments. Most needs for tax records (mortgage applications, financial aid, income verification) are satisfied by a transcript, so check whether the party asking for your records will accept one before you pay for a copy.
A full copy, requested on Form 4506, is the actual filed return with all attachments, including Forms W-2. It carries a processing fee for each tax year requested, payable to the United States Treasury, and it takes much longer to arrive. People usually order a copy only when a transcript will not do: an amended-return dispute, a lost records situation, or a requester that insists on the original document.
| What you send | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Form 4506-T | Any transcript type: return, account, wage and income, record of account, non-filing verification | Free |
| Form 4506-T-EZ | Only the individual tax return transcript | Free |
| Form 4506 | Full photocopy of a filed return with attachments | Processing fee per tax year |
| Phone: 800-908-9946 | Tax return and account transcripts | Free |
For most people, Form 4506-T is the right one. It covers every transcript type, including the wage and income transcript (handy when a W-2 went missing) and the verification of non-filing letter (sometimes needed for financial aid). The form's instructions list where to mail it, and the address depends on the state you lived in when you filed, so do not reuse an old IRS envelope without checking. Sign and date the form; an unsigned request sits unprocessed.
If you want only your own individual tax return transcript and nothing else, the 4506-T-EZ is a single-page version that asks for less. One detail worth knowing: you can have the transcript mailed to a third party, like your lender or college, if you name them on the form. That skips a round trip and can shave days off a mortgage or aid timeline.
The IRS processes mailed requests more slowly than online or phone ones, so build in extra time if you are up against a lender's deadline. Mailed transcripts arrive at the address on the form (or the third party you designated). If you need the records faster next time, the online transcript tool and the automated phone line exist for exactly that reason: online is the fastest, the phone is next, and mail is the slowest of the three.
Two special cases are worth knowing. If you live in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS waives the usual copy fees and expedites requests for people who need returns to claim disaster-related benefits or file amended returns. And if someone filed a fraudulent return using your name and Social Security number, there is a dedicated form for that: Form 4506-F, the identity theft victim's request for a copy of the fraudulent return.
Yes. If you would rather not print, envelope, and post the form yourself, you can describe the request to your AI assistant and have it printed and mailed to the IRS address for you. The form itself still needs your signature and the details only you know, so the letter you send is the signed, completed form. Approve the exact quoted price before anything goes out, as with any LetterAgent job.
