Home > Guides > Or current resident mail
It means the letter is addressed to whoever lives at that address, and that is you. "Or current resident" is occupant mail: marketers and other bulk senders address it generically so it reaches the household instead of a named person. You can open it, ignore it, or recycle it. Nobody else is coming for it.
Because they do not have your name, or do not care about it. Bulk mailers buy lists of addresses, not people, and "or current resident" lets them blanket every household on a route. New-mover marketing is the classic case: a realtor or a home-services company wants to reach whoever just bought your house, and they know the previous owner's name is useless for that. So the address gets "or current resident" and the mail lands with whoever lives there now.
Here is the tell it is worth knowing: "or current resident" mail is almost always bulk/marketing mail. Legitimate personal or business correspondence is addressed to a real person. The endorsement itself is a signal about what kind of mail you are holding before you even open it.
Yes to both. This is the part people overthink. The law about opening mail protects mail addressed to a specific other person: opening your neighbor's letter because it landed in your box is the problem. Mail addressed to "or current resident" at your address is addressed to you in your role as the resident. Open it, recycle it unopened, use it as kindling: all fine.
One practical note: if you just moved in, this mail is not forwarded to the previous residents under your name. It was never theirs to begin with. The mailer did not know their name either.
In Canada the equivalent phrasing is usually "Postal Customer" or "Occupant." Canada Post's unaddressed admail system works the same way: the piece is delivered to every delivery point on a route or in a postal code area, addressed to whoever lives there. Like its US cousin, it is bulk marketing mail, it is yours to toss, and it will never be forwarded when you move.
| Phrasing | Where you see it | What it really means |
|---|---|---|
| "Or current resident" | US bulk mail | Addressed to whoever lives here; the sender has no name on file |
| "Occupant" / "Current resident" | US bulk mail | Same idea, shorter form; often on coupons and flyers |
| "Postal customer" | Canada | Canada Post's term for unaddressed mail delivered to every household |
| Your actual name | Any mail | The sender knows who you are; this mail can be forwarded and returned |
Partly. Because this mail is addressed to your address rather than your name, the usual opt-outs are less effective against it: opting your name out of marketing lists does not stop mail addressed to "the resident." What does help is opting out at the source when you can identify the sender (many include an opt-out number), and reducing how much of your address data flows into list brokers in the first place. See our guide on stopping junk mail for the full rundown.
Also worth knowing: "or current resident" mail is not forwarded when you move and is not returned to sender. So if you are forwarding your mail after a move, expect the occupant mail to keep arriving at your old address for the new residents instead.
