Can I open a package before accepting delivery?

Usually not. Drivers are not set up to wait while you unbox something on the doorstep, and carrier contracts do not guarantee inspection before acceptance. What you can do: inspect the outside of the box, write any visible damage on the delivery receipt before you sign, photograph it, and refuse the parcel outright if it is visibly crushed. This is general information, not legal advice.

What do drivers actually allow?

In practice, very little beyond a quick look. A driver on a tight route will hand you the parcel, wait for a signature if one is required, and move on. Asking to open the box, check the contents, and then decide puts the driver in an awkward spot: if you reject the contents, they now have an open parcel to deal with, and their system has no clean workflow for that. Most will politely decline.

The exception is obvious damage. If the box is crushed, torn open, or rattling in a way that suggests breakage, say so out loud and ask the driver to note it. Drivers see damaged parcels regularly and most will acknowledge it, because the damage happened before the box reached your door and noting it protects them too.

Why does the signature matter so much?

Because a clean signature is the carrier's proof of delivery in good condition. Once you sign without noting anything, disputing damage later becomes your word against a signed receipt. The signature does not mean you inspected the contents; it means you received the parcel. That distinction is exactly why the note-before-you-sign habit matters.

How does refusing a delivery work?

You can refuse any parcel at the door in both the US and Canada, for any reason, including that it simply looks wrong. Tell the driver you are refusing it, do not sign, and the parcel returns to the sender through the carrier's network. The sender then deals with the carrier on the damage claim, which is usually faster than you filing as the recipient.

Two things to know. First, refusing works best at the moment of delivery; once you have accepted and opened the box, you cannot un-accept it, and the claim becomes a standard damage claim with you as the claimant. Second, for parcels left without a signature, there is nothing to refuse: photograph the box as you found it, then open it and document any damage for the claim.

What should I do right after accepting a damaged box?

Photograph everything before you throw away any packaging: the box as received, the damage, the item, and the packing materials. Keep all of it until the claim is resolved, because insurers can ask to inspect the packaging. Then file the claim promptly; carriers have filing windows, and waiting weakens your position. If you bought the item from a seller, tell them the same day with the photos attached: most sellers would rather replace or refund than argue, and your documentation makes their own carrier claim easy.
