What is the Official Election Mail logo?

The Official Election Mail logo is a red, white, and blue mark designed by the U.S. Postal Service to identify election-related mail, such as ballot materials and voter information. It makes election mail instantly visible to postal workers and sorting equipment, so it gets the handling it needs. It is not a postage marking and it does not replace a stamp.

What does the logo look like?

The logo combines an envelope graphic with the words "ELECTION MAIL." USPS publishes exact design rules for it in Publication 631, "Official Election Mail - Graphic Guidelines and Logos." The specs are precise: the stripes use Pantone 301 blue printed at 40 percent strength, and the envelope uses Pantone 485 red. Election officials may not shrink it, recolor it, or place anything inside a clearance zone around it that must be at least 0.25 inch wide.

Who is supposed to use it?

State and local election officials print it on outbound ballot mail and on return ballot envelopes. It is a design tool for election offices, not for voters. As a voter, you will see the logo on the envelopes your county sends you; you do not need to add anything special to your own envelope when mailing your ballot back. Regular postage rules still apply, and in some states the return envelope arrives with prepaid postage while in others you add your own stamp.

What happened with the 2026 federal ballot-mail rule?

With the November 2026 midterms approaching, this logo made national news. In March 2026, the White House directed USPS to set criteria for federal ballot mail, and in August 2026 the Postal Service finalized a rule requiring federal ballot envelopes to carry the Official Election Mail logo, be machine-scannable, and include a barcode unique to each voter. States would also have had to upload voter information to a new federal portal.

Two federal judges blocked the rule (in late August and mid-September 2026), and on September 14 the Supreme Court left the block in place for the 2026 elections through an emergency stay decision. The practical result: the new logo and barcode requirements do not apply to the 2026 midterms, and the ballot-mail procedures tested in prior elections remain in force. The courts' decision was about timing and authority, not about the logo itself, so future elections could revisit the question.

QuestionAnswer
What is the logo for?Making election mail visible to USPS workers and sorting equipment
Who prints it?State and local election offices, following USPS Publication 631
Does it replace postage? No; ballot mail still needs the correct postage
Did the 2026 federal rule take effect? No; courts blocked it before the November 2026 midterms
Does this affect Canada? No; this is a USPS mark for U.S. federal elections

Why does visibility matter for ballot mail?

Election mail runs on hard deadlines. A ballot that arrives after the state's receipt deadline may not be counted, even if it was mailed on time. The logo helps election mail stand out in the processing stream so postal employees can give it appropriate handling. It also signals to voters that the piece is genuine official election material rather than campaign advertising, which has no such marking requirements.
