Yes. You can write a letter to your future self and arrange for it to arrive next year. The usual methods are a scheduled-send service that holds and mails it on your date, or a do-it-yourself version: seal it, address it to yourself, and set a calendar reminder to mail it.
You write the letter now and pick a delivery date months or a year out. The service stores your letter (digitally, or as a physical copy you mail to them) and posts it when the date arrives, so it lands in your mailbox like any other letter. A few of these services are free or cheap for a single letter; others charge a small fee for longer holds or extras like a wax seal. Read the fine print on any service you have not used before: a letter to your future self only works if the company still exists next year, so favor ones with a track record.
It takes five minutes. Write the letter, put it in a sealed envelope, address it to yourself, and stash it somewhere you will not lose it: a desk drawer, a filing box, a book you open often. Then set a calendar reminder for the date you want to receive it, with a note to pull out the envelope and mail it. The calendar reminder is the whole trick; the envelope survives fine, but your memory of it will not. One practical point in your favor: stamps do not expire. US Forever stamps and Canada's permanent stamps stay valid no matter when you use them, so you can stamp the envelope today and mail it next December without worry.
| Method | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled-send service | You write now; they mail on your date | You want it fully hands-off and do not trust your own reminders |
| DIY: sealed envelope plus reminder | You keep the envelope and mail it yourself later | You want zero cost and full control over the letter |
| Trusted person | A friend or family member holds and mails it | You want a human in the loop and the letter is not too private |
Two things trip people up. First, the postmark will show the date it was mailed, not the date you wrote it, so date the letter itself ("Written New Year's Day, 2026") if you want future-you to know. Second, think about where you will live when it arrives: if you might move, address it to a stable address like a parent's house rather than your current apartment. And keep a copy, or at least a photo of the pages, before you seal it. Future-you will thank present-you, and present-you will enjoy rereading it the moment it lands.
