Roll it print-side in, slide it into a mailing tube, tape both end caps, and write the address lengthwise along the tube. Round tubes roll off conveyor belts, so triangular tubes are the safer pick for anything you care about. LetterAgent can't mail these: it handles flat letters only, so rolled or bulky items go through the post office.
Both are sold as mailing tubes, but they behave very differently inside a sorting facility. A round tube does what round things do: it rolls. On conveyor belts and sorting equipment, a round tube can wander, fall off belts, and get wedged into machinery, which is how tubes arrive dented, cracked, or late. Triangular mailing tubes exist precisely to solve this: three flat sides mean the tube sits still wherever it is placed. For a poster you could reprint, a round tube is fine. For a signed blueprint, an original artwork print, or anything irreplaceable, the triangular tube is the serious choice.
| Feature | Round tube | Triangular tube |
|---|---|---|
| Stability in sorting | Rolls on belts; can fall or jam | Sits flat; stays where placed |
| Crush resistance | Good: the cylinder is naturally strong | Good, with reinforced corners |
| End caps | Plastic caps that can pop off on impact | Usually glued or taped flaps |
| Best for | Replaceable posters, casual use | Originals, blueprints, anything you cannot redo |
Roll the document with the printed side facing inward, which protects the image or ink from scuffing against the inside of the tube. Roll it snugly but not tight: a roll that is crammed in will be hard for the recipient to flatten, and a roll that is too loose will rattle and dent. Before sliding it in, wrap the roll in a sheet of plain paper or tissue; this stops the edges of the print from catching on the tube's interior and gives the recipient something clean to unroll onto.
Secure the end caps. This is the step people skip and regret. Tape both caps to the tube body with packing tape, not just a quick strip but a full wrap around the seam. Caps pop off on impact, and a tube that arrives open-ended is a tube that arrives empty. If you are sending something valuable, tape the caps and then wrap the whole tube in kraft paper as an outer layer, which gives the address label a flat, stable surface too.
Write or label the address lengthwise, running along the tube from one end toward the other, not around it. Text that wraps around a curved surface is hard to read at a glance and impossible for automated equipment to scan. Use block capitals and dark ink, and put the postage where it will not be covered by handling: near one end, on the same side as the address.
Two things that help more than people expect. First, add your own return address to the tube. A tube with no return address that cannot be delivered has nowhere to go. Second, if the document inside is worth real money or cannot be replaced, write "DO NOT BEND" and "PHOTOS: DO NOT BEND" style markings on it, and consider tracking. Markings do not buy special handling, they are requests, not instructions, but combined with a sturdy triangular tube they are part of a sensible package.
Sometimes the better answer is not to roll it at all. Anything up to about tabloid size can go flat in a rigid mailer, which travels better than a tube and costs less to mail. Large-format prints and blueprints usually cannot go flat at standard mail sizes, which is why tubes exist. One honest note on LetterAgent's limits: the service mails flat letters only, 8.5x11 inches, single-sided, in a double-window envelope, with no inserts and no bulky items. A poster, a blueprint, or a rolled document simply does not fit that format, so for these you are going through the post office counter or a shipper that handles tubes.
