Can I mail keys?

LetterAgent prints letters only, with no inserts, so keys can't go through LetterAgent. To mail keys yourself, tape them flat to stiff card stock inside a padded mailer, so they can't poke through or tear the package in sorting machines. Loose keys in a paper envelope will shred it, and rigid contents trigger the nonmachinable surcharge.

DoDon't
Tape keys flat to a piece of stiff card stock or thin cardboardDrop loose keys into a paper envelope
Use a padded bubble mailerUse a plain paper envelope, which keys will tear open
Pay the nonmachinable surcharge or parcel ratePut one stamp on it and hope; it will come back for more postage
Add tracking for house or car keysMail your only copy of an important key with no tracking

What is the card-stock trick?

Lay the keys flat on a piece of stiff card stock, like the back of a notepad or a cut-down cereal box, and tape them down securely with packing tape. The card keeps the keys from moving, stops the teeth from catching on anything, and spreads the thickness evenly so the package does not bulge in one spot. Then slide the whole card into a padded mailer. This is how locksmiths and property managers mail keys every day, and it works because it turns a lumpy, rigid object into a flat, rigid object that the mail stream can handle.

Why a padded mailer instead of an envelope?

Because keys destroy paper envelopes. Sorting machines bend, squeeze, and slide mail at high speed, and a loose key acts like a can opener on a paper envelope: it tears through, falls out, and is gone. The padded mailer does two jobs at once: its bubble lining cushions the keys, and its tougher outer layer resists tearing. For a single house key, a small 4x8 padded mailer is plenty; for a ring of keys, size up.

Should I add tracking?

Yes, for anything you cannot easily replace. A lost house key means changing locks; a lost car key with a chip can cost hundreds to replace. Tracking costs little and tells you the keys arrived. If the keys are truly irreplaceable, registered mail gives you a signed chain of custody on top of tracking. And a practical tip: if you are mailing keys to a tenant or a housesitter, mail them a few days earlier than they need them, so a delay does not become an emergency. Photograph the keys before sealing the package, so you have a record of exactly what was sent.
