How do I mail documents to the CRA?

Mail CRA documents to the tax centre or program office that handles your specific matter, since the CRA uses different addresses for returns, objections, and appeals. Send anything with a deadline by registered mail so you have dated proof it was sent, and keep copies of everything: never mail your only copy of an original receipt.

This is general information, not tax advice.

Which address? There isn't just one.

The CRA routes paper by program and by your province of residence, so the address on the notice you received is usually the right one to reply to. Tax returns go to the tax centre for your region; objections and appeals go to separate intake offices; benefits correspondence goes somewhere else again. If you're starting fresh rather than replying, look up the current address for your specific form or program on the CRA site before you mail: tax centre addresses change more often than people expect. Sending your objection to the returns address doesn't make it vanish, but it does add weeks while it gets rerouted internally.

Why registered mail is worth it for CRA deadlines

Some CRA deadlines are judged by the mailing date, not the arrival date, and the postmark on registered mail is your evidence. Regular mail has no reliable proof of when you sent it: if the CRA says it never arrived, you have nothing to show. Registered mail gives you a receipt stamped at acceptance, tracking through the system, and a signature record. Staple that receipt to your copy of what you sent and file it where you can find it in two years, because CRA disputes have long memories.

What should you keep before mailing?

Photocopy or scan everything: the signed forms, every supporting receipt, and the envelope with the address. Never send original receipts if you can avoid it: send copies and keep the originals. If the CRA specifically asks for an original, send it registered, keep a scan, and note the date. And put your name, social insurance number, and tax year on every page: pages get separated in big processing centres, and an orphaned page with no identifier is a page that gets lost.
