LetterAgent
Mail physical letters by just asking your AI assistant.
LetterAgent prints letters only, with no inserts, so you can't mail cash through LetterAgent. Mailing cash through the post office is legal but unwise: it can be lost or stolen with no way to recover it. USPS Registered Mail is the safest option since every hand-off is logged, but a money order is the smarter move for almost everyone.
Cash is anonymous, untraceable, and irreplaceable. If the envelope is lost, damaged, or stolen, the money is simply gone: there is no serial-number registry to check, no stop-payment to place, and no refund to claim. Envelopes also betray their contents more than people think. A thick, stiff envelope, or one that crinkles like bills, is noticeable to anyone handling it, and mail theft is a real and common crime. Grandparents mailing birthday money get away with it most of the time, but "most of the time" is a bad standard for money.
| Option | How it works | If it goes missing |
|---|---|---|
| Money order | Buy at the post office, bank, or grocery store; the recipient cashes it like a check | Replaceable with your receipt; you can place a stop and get a refund |
| Cashier's check | Issued by your bank, drawn on the bank's own funds | Replaceable through the bank, though the process is slower |
| Personal check | Write it from your own account | Stop payment through your bank if it never arrives |
| Registered Mail with cash | USPS logs every hand-off from drop-off to delivery | The chain of custody helps, but lost cash is still lost cash |
For most situations, a money order wins: it costs a small fee, it is widely accepted, and the receipt lets you trace or replace it. Keep the receipt stub somewhere separate from the envelope, since the stub is what makes the replacement possible.
Use USPS Registered Mail. It is the most secure service USPS offers: the envelope travels in locked containers, every hand-off is signed for, and it is the service banks themselves use for shipping valuables. Do not make the envelope look like it holds cash: use a plain envelope, wrap the bills in a sheet of paper so they do not show through or crinkle, and avoid bulky or lumpy packaging that draws attention. Send it to an address where someone can receive it directly rather than a mailbox that sits full all day.
The same logic holds. Canada Post's Registered mail provides a signed chain of custody, and money orders from Canada Post or banks are the sensible substitute. Mailing cash across the border adds customs declarations into the mix, which is another reason to use a money order instead.
