Yes, you can use a PO box as a return address: a valid, rented PO box works just like a street return address for ordinary mail, and any undeliverable mail comes back to the box instead of your home address.
Write it the same way you would write any return address, in the upper left corner of the envelope: your name, then "PO Box" followed by the box number, then the city, state or province, and postal code or ZIP code of the post office that holds the box. The postal code must be the box's own code, not your home postal code. A PO box return address with the wrong postal code can still be delivered, since the box number and office usually settle it, but a wrong code slows the return and can send it to the wrong office first.
One formatting detail trips people up in the US: a PO box address can also be written in street-address form, using the post office's street address plus a unit number, if the post office offers that option. That form looks like a street address but still delivers to the box. Either form works as a return address. Pick one and use it consistently, so replies and returns all land in the same place.
Privacy is the main reason. A return address tells the recipient where to reply, and it tells anyone who handles the envelope where you collect mail. People who write to strangers, run a small business from home, or handle sensitive correspondence often prefer that replies go to a box rather than to their front door. A PO box also stays stable when you move house: keep renting the box and your return address does not change, even if your home address does.
There is also a practical benefit for people who travel. A box holds returned mail securely until you collect it, where a home mailbox can overflow or sit exposed. For a business, a PO box return address reads as a mailing address rather than a home address, which some customers prefer to see.
Undeliverable mail goes back to the return address, and with a PO box return address it goes back to the box. That is the whole point of a return address: without one, undeliverable mail is held and eventually discarded, and you never learn that your letter did not arrive. With a box, the returned envelope lands in your box, usually marked with the reason it could not be delivered, such as an unknown addressee or an insufficient address.
One catch: a box that is closed or lapsed cannot receive returns. If you stop paying the rental, the post office closes the box after a grace period, and mail addressed to it is returned to its sender or discarded. So a PO box return address only protects you while the box is active. Check the box regularly, because returned mail sitting uncollected is no better than mail you never received.
| Return address choice | Where returns go | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Home street address | Your mailbox | Reveals where you live |
| PO box | Your rented box | Rental cost, needs regular collection |
| Business street address | Your office | Fine for businesses, not private for home writers |
| No return address | Nowhere; held then discarded | You never learn a letter failed |
A few. Some recipients and some services require a street return address, particularly for legal or government correspondence where a physical address proves residence or jurisdiction. A PO box alone does not prove where you live, and a court or agency may reject it for that purpose. If a form asks for a physical address, give one; a PO box is a mailing address, not a residence.
Another case is certified and registered mail. In the US, certified mail can be addressed to a PO box, and the recipient signs at the counter or receives a pickup notice. In Canada, registered mail to a PO box works similarly, with pickup at the postal outlet. The return address side is simpler: a PO box return address on a certified or registered letter works the same as on an ordinary letter, since the return path uses the same machinery.
Finally, a private mailbox at a shipping store is not the same as a post office box, though it looks similar. A private box address usually includes a suite or unit number and the store's street address. It works as a return address too, but mail to it is handled by the store, not the postal operator, and pickup rules and hours are the store's, not the post office's.
LetterAgent prints your letter on standard letter paper and places it in a double-window envelope, where your sender address shows through one window and acts as the return address. If you give a PO box as your sender address, that box becomes the return address on the envelope, and undeliverable mail comes back to the box. You approve the exact quoted price before anything is sent, and LetterAgent letters go to US and Canadian addresses only.
