Home > Guides > Letter to a summer camper
Address the letter to the camper by full name, then add their bunk, cabin, or unit on the next line, then the camp's mailing address. Check the camp's mail policy first: many camps open packages, ban food, and hold mail that arrives after the session ends. Send letters early in the session so they arrive while the camper is still there.
Camp mail looks ordinary, but it runs through a small internal delivery system. The camp office sorts incoming mail by cabin or bunk group, and counselors hand it out at a set time, often called mail call. A letter missing the cabin line can sit unsorted for a day or more while the office figures out where the camper sleeps. For a two-week session, that delay eats a real share of the time the letter was meant to cover.
Use this layout, with the camper's full name first:
Jordan Lee
Bunk 12, Pine Cabin
Camp Wahanowin
123 Lake Road
Rural Route Town, ON K0M 1A0
The cabin or bunk line is the piece most senders skip, and it is the piece camp offices need most. If you do not know the cabin assignment yet, the camp office can usually tell a parent by phone, or the assignment may be in the pre-camp packet. Some camps use unit names or age-group names instead of cabin numbers, so copy whatever the camp itself uses. If the camp is in the US, use its street address and ZIP code the same way; the cabin line works identically on both sides of the border.
Early, and earlier than feels natural. Mail to a rural camp address can take a few extra days, and the camp office may only sort mail once a day. A letter mailed on the first day of a two-week session may arrive in the second week. Parents who want a letter waiting on arrival day sometimes mail it a few days before the session starts, so it is in the first mail call. Just confirm the camp accepts pre-session mail first, since some camps return mail that arrives before check-in.
The same timing logic applies in reverse at the end of a session. Mail that arrives after the camper has gone home is usually held, returned, or forwarded to the home address, depending on the camp's policy. A letter sent in the final days of a session has a real chance of never being opened at camp at all.
Check the camp's mail policy before sending anything beyond a letter, because camp rules here are stricter than ordinary mail rules. Many camps ban food in packages, since food in cabins attracts animals and creates allergy risks. Some camps open every package in front of staff. Others ban electronics, cash, and anything that could be shared unevenly among campers, like a large bag of candy for one child.
Glitter, confetti, and stickers that shed are another common ban, because they are hard to clean out of a shared cabin. If you want to decorate a letter, flat drawings and photos travel fine, while anything bulky or messy risks being confiscated at the mail table. When in doubt, a plain letter with news from home is the safest thing a camper can receive.
| Mail item | Typical camp treatment |
|---|---|
| Plain letter | Delivered at mail call, no screening beyond sorting. |
| Photos or drawings | Usually fine; flat items pass through easily. |
| Food or candy package | Often banned or confiscated; check policy first. |
| Care package with supplies | Often opened by staff; contents screened against camp rules. |
| Cash or gift cards | Often held by the office or banned outright. |
Yes, with one limit to keep in mind. LetterAgent mails single letters to US and Canadian addresses, and a camp address qualifies like any other. Describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the quoted price, and it is printed and mailed. LetterAgent letters contain only the letter itself, with no inserts or packages, which actually fits camp mail well, since a plain letter is the item camps handle most smoothly. If you need to send a package, use a parcel service instead, and check the camp's package policy before you ship it.
