Home > Guides > Welcome letter to a neighbor
A short welcome letter to a new neighbor is a kind gesture, and most people are glad to get one, provided it stays brief and asks for nothing. Introduce yourself by first name, mention one or two useful local facts such as trash day or the nearest park, and leave your contact details optional. No follow-up visit is owed.
Moving is chaotic. Boxes are everywhere, the internet may not work yet, and a stranger at the door can feel like one more demand. A letter waits patiently in the mailbox until the new neighbor has a minute to read it. It also gives them something a knock cannot: your name in writing, which they can refer back to later when they finally meet you and cannot remember whether you are Tom or Tim.
A letter also suits neighbors who are shy, or who work odd hours, or who simply prefer written introductions. It sets a friendly tone without requiring an instant social performance from someone who just carried a sofa up two flights of stairs.
That last line matters more than it looks. New neighbors often worry that a welcome note creates an obligation: a return visit, a thank-you gift, a friendship they did not ask for. Saying plainly that no reply is needed removes that worry, and paradoxically makes a reply more likely.
| Include | Example | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Your first name | "Hi, I'm Sam from next door." | They can greet you by name later |
| Trash day | "Trash goes out Monday night." | Saves a first-week mistake |
| One local tip | "The park at the end of the street has a dog run." | Useful, not overwhelming |
| Optional contact | "My number is below if you ever need anything." | Opens a door without pushing |
| No-pressure close | "No need to reply." | Removes obligation |
Leave out neighborhood politics. A welcome letter is not the place to warn about a noisy neighbor, a parking dispute, or a homeowners association feud. The new neighbor will learn the local dynamics soon enough, and your first impression should not be as the street's gossip. Leave out requests, too: do not ask them to trim a tree, move a bin, or keep a dog quiet in a welcome note. Those conversations, if needed, come later, after a relationship exists.
Leave out personal details about yourself that are not needed. Your life story, your work history, and your opinions on local schools do not belong in a first note. Keep it to half a page. A welcome letter that runs to two pages will not be read twice, and it may not be read once.
Within the first week or two of their move is best, while they are still learning the area and your local tips still help. Later than a month, the note can feel odd, though it is still better than nothing. Hand-delivering the letter to the mailbox or door is the friendliest method for a next-door neighbor, since it shows you live close by. Mailing it also works, especially if you live a few houses away, and it has a small advantage: the envelope makes the note feel like a real welcome rather than a flyer slipped under a door.
If you mail it through LetterAgent, describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed to the neighbor's US or Canadian address. One caution: do not mail a welcome letter to a neighbor whose name you do not know by guessing at it. Address it to "New Neighbor" or "The New Residents" only as a last resort, and prefer a first-name introduction once you learn their name from a mailbox or an introduction.
Nothing has gone wrong. Many people appreciate a welcome note and never answer it, because they are busy, or shy, or simply not letter writers. The note still did its job: it told them that at least one neighbor is friendly. Do not follow up with a second letter asking why they did not reply, and do not take silence personally. The next time you meet in person, a simple "Hi, I'm Sam from next door" is enough. The letter will do the rest, quietly, in the background.
