How do I mail a letter to a mentor?

A letter to a mentor should name the specific advice that changed your path, show what you did with it, and share one real update. Mentors value proof their time mattered far more than flattery, and a paper letter stands out in a busy inbox.

What do mentors actually want to hear?

The one thing mentors rarely get is a follow-up. They give advice, the conversation ends, and they never learn what happened next. So the most welcome sentence in a mentor letter is a concrete result: "I took the analyst role you suggested, and I passed the probation review last month." That single line repays years of guidance better than a page of praise.

Be specific about which advice mattered. "Your advice helped me a lot" tells them nothing. "You told me to ask for the project nobody wanted, and that project became my promotion case" tells them everything. If you can quote their words back to them, do it; mentors remember their own advice when they see it quoted.

When is the right time to write?

Good moments cluster around milestones: a new job, a promotion, a finished degree, a business launch, a career change. Writing right after the milestone keeps the news fresh and gives the mentor a reason to celebrate with you. But a letter also works years later. A mentor who hears from a former student after a decade often keeps that letter longer than any recent one, precisely because it arrived unprompted.

Avoid writing only when you need something. A thank-you letter that ends with a request for a reference reads like a transaction. If you do need a reference or an introduction, send the thank-you first, then make the request separately, later, in its own message.

OccasionWhat to sayWhat to avoid
Thank-you after guidanceThe advice, what you did, the resultGeneral praise with no example
Milestone updateThe news and the mentor's part in itA resume pasted into letter form
Reconnecting after yearsWhere you are now, one memory of themAn apology that runs longer than the update
Holiday or retirement noteOne story that captures their influenceAsking for anything in the same letter

How should you address a mentor?

Use the form of address they prefer. If they were "Professor Alvarez" when you knew them, stay with that unless they have invited a first name since. For a workplace mentor, the name you used at work is the safe choice. Getting this right signals respect; getting it wrong signals that you never paid attention, which is the opposite of the letter's message.

If you are mailing to a workplace or school, address the letter to the person by name at that organization, and include a department or office if you know it. Large organizations route mail by department, and a name alone can stall in a central mailroom.

How long should the letter be?

One page is the sweet spot. Mentors are busy, and a short letter gets read the day it arrives. Two pages is fine if the story needs it. Four pages is a memoir, and it will be skimmed, not read. Put the best sentence early: the result, the news, or the specific thanks. Do not save it for the last paragraph, where tired readers never reach it.

Can I mail it through LetterAgent?

Yes, for mentors in the United States or Canada. Describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed in a double-window envelope with your address as the return address. A paper letter to a mentor carries weight that an email cannot match, and the return address lets them write back without searching for your contact details.
