Mail a letter to a grandparent by writing it in large, clear type, addressing it to their home or care residence, and putting your return address on it so a reply comes back easily. A short, warm letter beats a long, formal one, and a mailed letter is easy to keep on a table or fridge.
Start with one piece of news from your own life, then ask one real question about theirs. Grandparents often reread letters, so specific details land better than general updates. "I started a new job in the warehouse on Tuesdays" gives them something to picture. "Things are fine here" does not. Mention people they know by name: a sibling, a cousin, an old neighbor. That turns a solo update into a family conversation on paper.
Keep the tone the way you actually talk to them. If your relationship runs on jokes, keep the jokes. If it runs on quiet check-ins, keep it quiet. A letter that sounds like a stranger wrote it will sit unanswered, even if every fact in it is correct.
Readability matters more than length. Large type, short paragraphs, and plenty of white space make a letter easy to pick up again. Dark ink on light paper helps, and so does one topic per paragraph. Avoid cramming a whole month of news into a single dense block; eyes tire, and the second half goes unread.
A few touches carry outsized weight:
| Detail | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Type size | Large, clear type with short paragraphs | Easier to read and reread without strain |
| Address | Full home address, or residence name plus room number | Care residences sort mail by resident and room |
| Return address | Your full address on the letter itself | Lets a reply come back without hunting for your address |
| Photos | Describe photos in words, or send them separately | LetterAgent prints letters only, with no loose inserts |
Address the letter to the residence, with their full name and room or apartment number if you know it. Staff sort incoming mail by resident, and a missing room number can delay delivery by a day or more. If you are unsure of the room number, call the front desk and ask how mail should be addressed; they answer this question every day.
Some residences hold mail at a desk for pickup rather than delivering it to rooms. If your grandparent has trouble walking to the desk, a short note to staff is not needed; a family member can simply ask at the desk whether mail is being collected. For a grandparent with vision trouble, mention it in your letter and offer to call and read it aloud together.
The return address does most of the work. With LetterAgent, the sender address shows through the envelope window and acts as the return address, so your grandparent does not need to guess where to send a reply. In the letter itself, say plainly that you would love a reply, and give them something specific to answer: a question about a recipe, a memory, or a family story. A blank "write back soon" is easy to put off. A question is easy to answer.
Do not expect a fast reply, and do not take a slow one personally. Some grandparents write back the same week; others keep a letter for a month before answering it. The letter itself is the gift. A reply is a bonus.
Yes, for grandparents in the United States or Canada. Describe the letter to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed in a double-window envelope with your address as the return address. Senders can be anywhere in the world, so a grandchild living abroad can still send a letter home. LetterAgent prints letters only, so loose photo prints cannot ride along; describe the photo in the letter, or send photos in a separate envelope by traditional mail.
