What happens if I don't empty my mailbox?

Your carrier stops stuffing mail into it. After a few days of an overflowing box, the carrier pulls your accumulated mail back to the post office, leaves you a pickup notice, and holds everything for about ten days. If you still don't collect it, it all goes back to the senders as undeliverable.

The short version of the timeline:

SituationWhat the carrier doesWhat it costs you
Box is full for a few daysStops delivering; accumulated mail is held at the post office with a pickup notice left for youA trip to the post office with ID to claim it
Mail sits unclaimed ~10 daysEverything is endorsed and returned to the senders as undeliverableSenders may resend it, bill you again, or assume you moved
Box damaged or unusableTreated the same as a full box: delivery stops until you fix or replace itA new mailbox, which USPS requires you to provide
You planned ahead insteadA free USPS Hold Mail request keeps everything at the office while you're awayNothing: holds are free and your mail waits intact

Will the carrier really stop delivering my mail?

Yes. Carriers are not allowed to force mail into an overflowing box, and they're not supposed to leave your mail sitting on top of or beside the box where it can blow away or be stolen. A full mailbox reads to the carrier as a delivery problem: either nobody lives there anymore, or nobody's home to notice. Either way, the safe move is to stop deliveries until the box is usable again. If you're just back from a long trip and find a pickup notice, that's exactly what happened.

Does returned mail come back to me eventually?

No. Once mail is returned to sender, it's the sender's problem to resolve, and many won't. A returned bill doesn't pause the due date. A returned letter from a government office doesn't extend your deadline. The practical damage of a full mailbox isn't the trip to the post office; it's the letters you never see because the sender decided you were gone. That's also why a free hold request beats just letting mail pile up when you're traveling: held mail comes back to you in one bundle, while returned mail is gone.

What about Canada Post?

Canada Post works the same way in practice. If your mailbox or community mailbox compartment stays full, mail accumulates at the retail post office and a notice card tells you to pick it up. Unclaimed items are returned to sender after the hold period. Community mailbox users have one extra wrinkle: a full compartment means new items (especially parcels) get held at the counter with a notice card left in the compartment, so it's worth checking the compartment and the notice slot regularly.
