Can I mail a letter to Antarctica?

Yes, though not through LetterAgent: it only mails to US and Canadian addresses. Mail to Antarctica goes to a person at a research station, routed through that country's postal system. Americans write to McMurdo or South Pole stations through the US Antarctic Program's APO addresses; other nations' stations go through their own national posts.

How do you address a letter to Antarctica?

You do not address it to "Antarctica." You address it to a named person at a specific station, using the routing of whichever country runs that station. For the American stations, the US Antarctic Program publishes mailing addresses that work like military mail:

StationAddress format
McMurdo StationParticipant's name, PSC 769 Box 700, APO AP 96599-9998
South Pole StationParticipant's name, PSC 768 Box 400, APO AP 96598-0001
Palmer Station and research vesselsName, station or vessel name, c/o Antarctic Support Contract, 7400 S. Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112 (flat mail only)

Because these are APO addresses, ordinary domestic US postage applies: sending a letter to McMurdo costs the same as sending one across town. The catch is time, not money. Your letter travels through the military postal system, stages through Christchurch, New Zealand, and then flies south on cargo planes when weather and schedules allow.

How does the mail actually get there?

Letters move faster than packages; that is the single most useful thing to know. Flat mail slips onto cargo flights more easily, while packages compete for limited space and may miss a season entirely. The US Antarctic Program advises getting packages in the mail by mid-October for the austral summer season, and warns against perishable food and foam packing peanuts. Prescription medicines should go in envelopes, not packages, so they travel with the faster flat mail.

What about other countries' stations?

Every national program runs its own mail. The British Antarctic Survey routes mail through the Falkland Islands, flying it from its airbase on an "air bridge" back to the UK, where it enters the normal postal system. The British Antarctic Territory even issues its own postage stamps, separate from Royal Mail. And at Port Lockroy, a former British research station turned museum, the old post office still operates in the summer cruise season: around eighteen thousand postcards a year go out from its historic post box, traveling by ship to the Falklands before rejoining the world's mail.

Can you get a letter postmarked from Antarctica?

Yes, and collectors love them. Stations that operate post offices apply their own postmarks, which is why Antarctic covers (mailed envelopes kept as souvenirs) are a whole niche in stamp collecting. The Port Lockroy postcards mentioned above are the most accessible version: tourists write them at the museum, and they come home carrying a genuine Antarctic postmark. It is one of the few souvenirs that is literally stamped by the place itself.

What if you do not know anyone there?

Then your options narrow. You cannot write to "any scientist at McMurdo" and expect delivery; the mail needs a named recipient. Some outreach and education programs run letter exchanges with station staff, and researchers occasionally invite mail from students or the public. But unsolicited mail to a stranger at a research station is unlikely to find its reader. The honest version: Antarctica has mail service, but it is a closed loop for the people stationed there, not a public mailbox at the bottom of the world.
