Is there a free way to mail a letter online?

No. There is no genuinely free way to mail a physical letter online. Every letter that travels through USPS or Canada Post needs postage, and postage always costs something. Someone has to pay for the print, the envelope, and the postage. Any service that looks free is either shifting the cost or limiting what "free" means.

Why can't online mailing be free?

A physical letter has unavoidable costs. Printing requires paper, ink, and a machine. The envelope and the address window add materials. And postage is a regulated price: USPS and Canada Post do not give free carriage to commercial mailers, so no middleman can absorb postage forever without charging you somehow. Email and text messages are free because moving data is nearly costless. Moving paper is not.

What "free" offers actually mean

When mail services advertise free letters, one of a few things is happening:

ClaimReality
"Send your first letter free"Trial credit; normal pricing applies after
"Free with referral"The company pays it as a marketing cost
"Free printing at the library"Print is free; you still buy the stamp and envelope
"Email it instead"Free, but it is not mail and it carries no postage or postmark

When is email or text the better free option?

Sometimes you do not need a physical letter at all. An email reaches the person instantly, costs nothing, and works fine for friendly updates, job inquiries, and anything where a postmark or formal record is not required. But for legal notices, official correspondence, and anything a recipient's process expects on paper, email is not a substitute. In the U.S., certified mail and in Canada, registered mail exist precisely because a physical record matters.

What does the no-printer path actually cost?

The honest alternative to a free lunch is a service that shows you the real cost before you commit. With LetterAgent, the flow is: describe your letter to your AI assistant, get a per-letter quote with the page count verified, approve the exact price, pay once through Stripe Checkout, and the letter is printed and mailed. No account, no subscription, no top-ups. You pay when you send, and you know the price before anything moves.
