How do I ask to postpone jury duty by mail?

Mail a written request to the court listed on your summons before your report date: include your juror/summons number, the date you are assigned, the reason you cannot serve, and the future dates you are available. Most courts grant one postponement readily; ignoring the summons can lead to fines or a contempt order, so always respond in writing.

What reasons actually work?

Courts hear postponement requests all day, and the ones that succeed are specific and documented. A surgery date, a caregiving responsibility with no backup, nonrefundable travel booked before the summons arrived, or a work conflict you can show in writing: all routinely granted. Vague hardship with no detail is routinely denied. One tactic that consistently helps: propose the future dates yourself rather than asking the court to pick. A clerk can say yes to "any Monday in March" far faster than to an open-ended request.

How many postponements can I get?

Plan on one. Most courts grant a single deferral readily, often pushing service out several months, and treat a second request with real skepticism. A second postponement usually needs stronger documentation and sometimes a judge's approval rather than a clerk's. This is also why you should not burn your one deferral casually: if a genuine emergency hits later, you want it unused.

What should I never do?

Ignore the summons. Failing to respond or appear can lead to fines or a contempt order, and courts do follow up: the summons is a court order, not an invitation. Do not lie about your reason, either: misrepresenting hardship to a court is its own legal problem, worse than jury duty. And do not assume a phone call counts: some courts allow deferrals by phone or online, which is fine, but get the confirmation in writing. A mailed letter with tracking gives you proof the court received your request before the report date, which is exactly what you need if the court later claims otherwise.

Can LetterAgent mail my postponement request?

Yes. Describe the request to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is printed and mailed to the court. Mail it early enough to arrive before your report date, and keep the tracking number until you have the court's written confirmation of the new date. If your summons includes a specific deferral form, fill that out and mail it yourself instead: courts process their own forms fastest.
