How do I stop junk mail and catalogs?

Register once with the opt-out services and the bulk of it fades within a few months: in the US, DMAchoice and optoutprescreen.com for preapproved credit offers; in Canada, the Canadian Marketing Association's Do Not Contact service and Canada Post's Red Dot program for unaddressed admail. Then opt out directly with the worst repeat offenders.

How do I opt out in the US?

Start with the two big ones. DMAchoice registers you with the mail-preference service run by the marketing industry's association, which suppresses mail from member companies for years; expect existing lists to take a few months to flush through. Then visit optoutprescreen.com to stop the "you're preapproved" credit and insurance offers, which come from a different pipeline (credit-bureau prescreening) that DMAchoice doesn't cover. For catalogs, Catalog Choice lets you pick specific catalogs to kill; most big catalog retailers also honor an unsubscribe request made through their website or the phone number printed on the catalog.

How do I opt out in Canada?

Canada splits the job in two because so much junk arrives unaddressed. Register with the Canadian Marketing Association's Do Not Contact service to stop addressed marketing mail from member companies. Then handle the flyers: Canada Post's Red Dot program stops unaddressed Neighbourhood Mail (the coupon packs and flyer bundles) when you place the program's red-dot sticker inside your mailbox. Your letter carrier is required to respect it; government mail and anything addressed to you personally still gets delivered.

Why am I still getting mail from companies I opted out of?

Because you have a relationship with them. Nearly every opt-out system exempts companies you already do business with: your bank, your insurer, the store whose loyalty card is in your wallet. Those get handled one by one, through each company's own privacy or unsubscribe page. Political mail, charity solicitations, and local neighborhood notices are also exempt from most lists, in both countries.

Is there anything worth doing besides the registries?

Yes: go after the top offenders directly. If two or three senders account for most of the pile, call or use their websites to opt out and you'll see faster results than any registry gives. When a piece slips through, writing "refused: remove from mailing list" and returning it puts the correction cost on the sender. And when you buy something or sign up for anything new, look for the pre-checked "send me offers from our partners" box: unchecking it is the cheapest opt-out there is.
