Yes. Most carriers let you redirect a package to a nearby pickup point before the first delivery attempt. You request the hold through the tracking page, show photo ID matching the name on the label, and collect it at a post office, depot, or partner location. The hold has to be requested while the package is still moving, not after it has been returned to sender.
The request always starts from the tracking number. Enter it on the carrier's tracking page and look for an option like "hold for pickup," "redirect," or "deliver to a pickup location." If you are the shipper, you can usually arrange this at the time you buy the label by addressing it to a specific pickup point. If you are the recipient, you typically need a free carrier account (USPS, UPS, and FedEx each have one) to change delivery instructions on a package addressed to you.
Timing matters. Once the driver has scanned the package as out for delivery, some carriers lock the instructions and the change may not apply until after a failed attempt. Put the request in as early as you can, ideally the same day you get the tracking number. A hold placed after the driver has already knocked is often too late for that day.
| Carrier | What the hold option is called | Where you pick it up |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Post | Hold for Pickup / deliver to post office | A designated post office, chosen on the tracking page or by the shipper |
| USPS | Hold for Pickup (USPS.com) | The destination post office; packages addressed "General Delivery" work without an account |
| UPS | UPS My Choice delivery change | UPS Access Point locations, often in pharmacies and convenience stores |
| FedEx | Hold at FedEx Location | FedEx Office stores and partner pickup points |
Bring photo ID that matches the recipient name on the shipping label. This is the step that trips people up: if your partner ordered the package and you go to collect it with your own ID, most counters will refuse the handoff. The name on the ID has to match the name on the label. For business addresses, the counter may also ask for a business card or a letter on company letterhead showing you are authorized to collect on the company's behalf.
Bring the tracking number or the delivery notice card too. Counter staff can look a package up by name, but a notice card or tracking number makes the lookup fast, and at busy urban post offices it can be the difference between a two-minute wait and a long one. Some carriers also send a "ready for pickup" email or text; wait for it before heading over, because a hold request does not mean the package has arrived yet.
A held package sits at the pickup point for a limited window, then goes back to the sender. The exact window depends on the carrier and the service level, and oversized parcels sometimes get shorter windows because they take up floor space. If you cannot get there in time, many carriers let you authorize someone else to pick it up, but that person needs ID matching the label plus, in some cases, a signed note from the named recipient.
Missed-delivery packages follow a similar path on their own: after a failed attempt, the driver leaves a notice and the parcel waits at the local facility. The proactive hold is simply the same outcome without the failed attempt, the notice card, and the day of delay. If you know you will not be home, requesting the hold up front saves a full cycle.
A few shipments cannot be redirected. Packages with signature-required services where the signature is tied to a specific adult at the address, some alcohol deliveries, and certain customs-controlled international parcels may not be eligible for pickup changes. Perishable goods are another edge case: sitting in a pickup locker for three days can be worse than a porch delivery at noon. Check the carrier's eligibility rules before you rely on a hold for anything time-sensitive.
