Home > Guides > Free fax cover page ad
Because the ad is how the fax gets sent for free. Free online fax services typically let you send a small number of pages per day and print their own branding on the cover sheet. If the branding bothers you or the limits get in the way, the paid tier of the same service sends clean pages, usually without the cover-page ad.
Nothing about faxing is actually free to provide: every fax burns phone-line time through a fax provider, and that costs money per page. The free tier exists to pull you in, and it is funded three ways. First, the branded cover page is advertising: your recipient sees the service's logo on every fax you send. Second, the page limits (often just a few pages per day) push frequent users toward the paid plan. Third, the free tier usually requires an account, which puts you on the mailing list for upsells.
| Free fax tier | Paid fax tier | |
|---|---|---|
| Pages per day | Usually a small handful | Higher or unlimited, depending on the plan |
| Cover page | Often carries the service's branding or ad | Usually clean, with only your cover sheet |
| Account needed | Almost always | Almost always |
| Sender number | Sometimes a shared or rotating number | Often your own dedicated number |
The ad is only the most visible trade. The less obvious one is privacy: your document passes through the free service's servers either way, free or paid, but the free tier's business model is built on volume and upselling, not discretion. The page caps also have a way of failing you at the worst moment: the one time you need to send a 12-page insurance packet is the day the free tier stops at five. And some free services stamp the branding on the cover page even when you upload your own cover sheet, replacing yours with theirs.
Three situations justify paying. First, professional documents: a job application, a legal form, or anything sent to a client looks better without a stranger's logo on page one. Second, volume: if you fax weekly, the per-fax or monthly math beats the daily free caps quickly. Third, sensitive documents: medical forms, financial paperwork, and legal filings deserve a service whose revenue comes from you, the customer, not from advertising to your recipient.
The alternative that is gaining ground: send through your AI assistant instead. With LetterAgent, you describe the fax, the assistant quotes the exact per-fax total up front with the page count verified, you approve it, and it is sent. No free tier, no branded cover page, no subscription. LetterAgent faxing is in testing right now and sends to US and Canadian numbers only.
