Yes. Online faxing works from anywhere with an internet connection, so being abroad changes nothing about sending: you upload the document and the service dials the US or Canadian fax number for you. The old alternative, dialing a fax machine directly from a foreign phone line, is slow, unreliable, and expensive by comparison.
LetterAgent's fax service is currently in testing and sends to US and Canadian fax numbers only; where you are sitting when you ask does not matter.
The fax call itself never touches your location. When you send through an online fax service, your document travels over the internet to the service's servers, and the servers place an ordinary domestic fax call to the destination number. To the receiving machine, the call looks like it came from the service's own lines. Your hotel wifi in Lisbon and your phone in Toronto produce the exact same fax on the other end, because the only call that matters happens between two domestic numbers.
You can, if you have a phone line and a fax machine or a fax modem, but it is the worst option abroad. International fax calls are billed at international voice rates, which hotels mark up aggressively. Foreign phone systems use different tones and signaling that can confuse older fax machines, so transmissions fail or garble more often. And you need the full international dialing sequence correct: exit code, country code, area code, number, with no room for error. One wrong digit sends your documents to a stranger. Online faxing skips all of this.
Very little: the document as a file (a photo or scan from your phone works), the destination fax number, and an internet connection. Most hotel wifi is fine for uploading a few pages. If the document is paper, photograph each page in good light or use your phone's document scanner; flatten any signature into the file before you send. The confirmation report comes back to you the same way it would at home.
| Method | Works from abroad? | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Online fax service (web or app) | Yes, anywhere with internet | Destination must be a US or Canadian number for LetterAgent |
| Hotel business center fax machine | Sometimes | Per-page fees, international dialing charges, no privacy |
| Dialing from your own phone line | Technically | International rates, tone incompatibility, dialing errors |
| Email to fax gateways | Yes | Attachment limits; check the service covers your destination |
Fax machines receive around the clock, so the time difference only matters for humans. If someone needs to act on your fax when it arrives, send with their business hours in mind, not yours: a fax that lands at 3 AM their time sits in the tray until morning either way. For anything urgent, a quick message saying "fax sent, please confirm receipt" does more than perfect timing.
That depends on your setup, not your location. LetterAgent handles outbound faxing only; it does not receive inbound faxes. If you are expecting a fax back, options include having it sent to your hotel's front desk (ask for their fax number and confirm they will hold it for you), or to an online fax service with an inbound number you control. Either way, arrange it before you leave: a sender with a document and no destination number is stuck.
