No. The IRS does not accept Form 1040-X, the amended tax return, by fax. Your two routes are mailing the paper return to the address the IRS lists for your state, or e-filing the amendment if your tax software supports it. Faxing an amended return will not get it processed, and the delay can cost you refund interest. This is general information, not tax advice.
| What you're sending | Fax accepted? | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1040-X (amended return) | No | Mail it or e-file it |
| Original return (1040/1040-SR/1040-NR) | No | Mail it or e-file it |
| Response to an IRS notice or exam letter | Sometimes: only if the notice names a fax number | Use the fax number printed on the notice |
| Tax transcript request (Form 4506-T) | Sometimes: to the number on the form instructions | Follow the form's own fax instructions |
It comes down to where the paper goes. When you respond to an audit letter or an exam notice, your fax goes to a specific human: the examiner named on the notice, who reads it at their desk. An amended return has no named recipient. It goes into a processing pipeline built around mailed envelopes and electronic submissions, and a fax arriving at a general IRS fax line has no queue to join. That is why the instructions for 1040-X list mailing addresses by state and say nothing about fax.
This is also why people mix it up. Tax professionals genuinely do fax things to the IRS all the time: power-of-attorney forms to the CAF unit, responses to correspondence audits, penalty-abatement requests to specific examiners. Each of those has a published fax number tied to the document. The 1040-X does not, which is the signal.
The fastest route is usually e-filing the amended return through tax software that supports it, since you get an electronic acknowledgment the IRS received it. If you file on paper, mail it to the address listed in the 1040-X instructions for your state of residence; that address can differ from where you mail an original return, so read the instructions for the amended form specifically. Certified mail with return receipt is the sensible choice: it gives you a dated proof the IRS received the amendment, which matters for the refund clock.
Attach everything the amended return asks for: any schedules or forms that changed, plus the supporting documents. An incomplete 1040-X gets kicked back, and the rework takes weeks.
The IRS runs a "Where's My Amended Return" tool that shows the status of a 1040-X after it has been received and scanned into the system. Processing is slow by design: amended returns get manual review, and it routinely takes months. Do not re-file or fax a copy thinking it will speed things up; duplicates create confusion in the pipeline and can slow your case further.
