Sometimes. Service Canada publishes dedicated fax lines for specific programs, but an ordinary individual EI or CPP matter usually goes through your My Service Canada Account online or by phone. Fax is for the program lines that still accept it, not a shortcut around the standard process.
For most personal EI and CPP business, the online route is the one Service Canada wants you on. Inside your My Service Canada Account you can submit EI supporting documents with the secure upload tool and use eForms to report absences, courses, or changes. Applications themselves go through the online application, and Service Canada's phone lines handle what the account cannot. If you fax documents for an ordinary claim without being told to, they may not be matched to your file, since individual claim processing runs on the online case system. Always call first and ask whether fax is accepted for your specific matter.
| Area | How fax fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Employer programs | Specific programs publish fax numbers, for example the EI Premium Reduction Program for employers | These lines serve employer-side filings, not individual claims |
| Appeals | The Tax Court of Canada accepts CPP and EI appeals by fax | Appeals go to the court, not to Service Canada's processing centres |
| International agreements | Certificates of coverage under social security agreements can be sent by fax or mail | Cross-border workers only, through the CRA's CPP and EI rulings division |
| Individual EI or CPP claims | Online account, secure upload, eForms, or phone | No general public fax line for everyday claims |
People often blur Service Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency, and the fax picture differs. The CRA still publishes fax numbers for tax program areas and its tax centres accept faxed forms and correspondence as a matter of routine. That is why there is a separate guide on faxing documents to the CRA: the tax side genuinely still uses fax for ordinary business. Service Canada's benefits side has moved individuals toward the online account, while keeping fax for specific program desks. If your matter is about benefits (EI, CPP, OAS), start at canada.ca and your online account; if it is about taxes, the CRA's fax lines are the ones to look up.
If an agent gave you a fax number, follow it. Get the exact number they named, ask for the name of the program or desk it reaches, and put your Social Insurance Number on the cover sheet and on every page. Fax the documents, keep the confirmation page, and write down the date, the number you dialed, and the agent's name. Then check your online account in a few business days: if the documents do not appear, call back with your confirmation page in hand. A fax sent to a published program line with your SIN on every page is traceable; a fax sent to a guessed number is not.
Families often ask this when an older parent or a relative without internet access needs help. Service Canada takes privacy seriously: agents will generally not discuss another adult's file with you unless that person has authorized it, and a fax signed by you on their behalf can be rejected. The clean route is for the person to sign the documents themselves and to note any consent to communicate on file. If you are helping a parent, be on the call with them so they can give verbal authorization while you handle the faxing. Never invent or "helpfully fill in" answers on someone else's forms: it counts as misrepresentation on a federal benefits file.
LetterAgent can send your fax if the Service Canada program line is a Canadian number (faxes to US numbers are also supported). You describe the fax to your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe. The fax feature is currently in testing, so it is not promised to be available for any particular send, and faxes are outbound only: there is no inbound number to receive the program's reply.
Ready to fax it? Fax with LetterAgent: describe it to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is sent.
