Yes. Many auto insurers still accept a first notice of loss by fax, along with the police report, repair estimates, and photos of the damage. Faxing gives you a timestamped confirmation page, which matters because most policies require you to report the accident promptly.
| Document | What it shows | Fax tips |
|---|---|---|
| First notice of loss | Date, time, location, drivers involved, your policy number | The claim form or a signed letter with these facts works; keep it factual, no opinions about fault |
| Police report | The officer's account, the report number, any citations | Fax the full report, not just the cover page; request it from the department that took it |
| Repair estimates | What the shop says it will cost, itemized | Two estimates are stronger than one; fax the full itemized pages, not summaries |
| Photos of damage | The extent and location of every dent, scratch, and crack | High-contrast prints, one photo per page; caption each with the date |
Apps are convenient when the accident is simple, but fax earns its place in three situations. First, when you need a clean paper trail: the confirmation page proves exactly when the insurer received your first notice of loss, which matters because policies penalize late reporting. Second, when the claim is contested: an adjuster may ask for a signed written statement, and a faxed signed page beats a phone note. Third, when you are dealing with the other driver's insurer: you may have no account on their app at all, but you can fax their claims department just like anyone else. Apps upload; faxes document.
Your policy almost certainly says you must report "promptly" or within a specific window after the accident. People miss this when they wait for the police report, the repair estimate, or the soreness to settle. You do not need the full file to start the claim: send the first notice immediately with what you know, and fax the police report and estimates when they arrive. The confirmation page from the first fax is your proof you reported on time, even if the supporting documents trickle in over the following weeks.
Faxing photos of damage taken on a phone screen or from a dim garage is the classic failure: the adjuster sees a dark rectangle and asks for a resend. Print photos at a decent size with captions, or better, fax the body shop's estimate first and send photos through a channel that preserves quality. Another common mistake is faxing the other driver's insurance card but not your own policy number on the cover sheet, which lands the packet in the wrong claim file. And check every page after faxing a police report: carbon-copy pages and faint handwriting are the ones that come out unreadable.
Always. Fax the originals or good copies, and file away the exact pages you sent next to the confirmation page, with the date and the number you dialed written on top. Claims sometimes come back months later asking for a document you already sent, and being able to refax the identical page in minutes beats reconstructing the file from memory. If you end up in a dispute about whether a repair estimate or police report was received, your filed copy plus the confirmation page is the complete answer. Insurers keep records too, but you should never rely on their filing system to protect your claim.
LetterAgent can send your fax if the insurer's claims fax line is a US or Canadian number. You describe the fax to your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe. The fax feature is currently in testing, so it is not promised to be available for any particular send, and faxes are outbound only: there is no inbound number to receive the adjuster's reply.
Ready to fax it? Fax with LetterAgent: describe it to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and it is sent.
