Can I fax a tax transcript request (Form 4506-T) to the IRS?

Yes. The IRS accepts Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, by fax. Download the current version of the form from irs.gov, complete it, sign it by hand, and fax it to the number listed in that form's instructions for the state where you filed. Keep your confirmation page; transcripts themselves are free.

This is general information, not tax advice.

Which form do I actually need?

People mix up two similar forms, and the wrong one wastes weeks. Form 4506-T gets you a transcript, which is a free condensed record of your return, your account, or your wage and income statements. Form 4506 (no T) gets you a full copy of the filed return, which the IRS charges a fee for and which takes much longer. Most requests, mortgage underwriting, income verification for loans, proof of filing, only need the transcript. Also note the transcript masks your taxpayer identification number for security, which is why the form asks for an optional customer file number that the IRS will print on the transcript so your lender can match it.

How do I fax it correctly?

The single most important detail: the fax number depends on where you lived when you filed, and the numbers are printed in the instructions for the current revision of the form, not on the form itself. Old copies of the instructions floating around online can carry outdated numbers, so pull the instructions from irs.gov the day you send. Fill in the form completely, including the tax years you need, and sign it; the IRS rejects unsigned or incomplete forms and will not call you to fix them. One signed 4506-T can request transcripts for up to several tax years on the same form, as long as they are for the same taxpayer. Allow processing time after faxing: faxed requests go through the same processing queue as mailed ones.

Is there a faster route than fax?

Usually, yes. The IRS online account and Get Transcript service can show most transcript types immediately after identity verification, which beats any paper channel. The trade-off is that online identity verification fails for some people, people with thin credit files or without a financial account to verify against, and in those cases the fax route shines. Phone requests through the automated line are another option but generally slower than online. Fax sits in the middle: faster than mail, available when online verification does not work, and it produces a dated confirmation page that mail does not.

What trips people up?

Three recurring problems. First, requesting the wrong transcript type: wage and income transcripts, not tax return transcripts, are what lenders usually want for income verification, and they are only available for past years once employers have filed. Second, name or address mismatches: the name and address on the form must match what the IRS has on file for the tax year, so use your filing name, including any name you filed under before a marriage or divorce. Third, faxing a transcript request when you actually need to file a return: 4506-T does not file anything, and faxing it to the transcript line when you owe a return just burns time. If you have not filed, file first.
