Home > Guides > Faxing a pet adoption application
Yes, many shelters and rescues accept a pet adoption application by fax, especially smaller rescues that still run on paper files. Confirm the shelter publishes a fax number for applications, complete the household and vet-reference pages, and follow up by phone so your application is not left sitting in a machine.
| Page of the application | What shelters check | Common reason for a delay |
|---|---|---|
| Household details | Who lives in the home, ages of children, other pets | Blank lines about current pets |
| Housing | Own or rent, landlord permission for pets | No landlord contact listed |
| Vet reference | Past pet care, vaccination history | Vet clinic name without a phone number |
| Animal of interest | Which pet, backup choices, activity level | Pet already adopted before review |
| Signature and date | Agreement to the adoption terms | Unsigned final page |
Use the shelter own website or adoption packet, not a directory listing. Some shelters publish one fax number for the front office and a different one for adoptions, and a fax sent to the wrong machine may wait days before anyone routes it. If the shelter only lists an email form or an online application, use that route instead: faxing an application to a number meant for veterinary records can look like you ignored their process. Breed-specific rescues run by volunteers are the most likely to accept fax, since a volunteer may check the machine once a day from home.
Shelters read adoption applications as a safety screen, so vague answers hurt more than honest ones. Say plainly how many hours the animal would be alone, whether anyone in the home has allergies, and what happened to previous pets. A skipped question reads as a hidden problem, while a short honest answer lets staff judge fit. For renters, landlord permission is often the single item that stalls an approval, so add the landlord name and number even if the form only asks for a yes-or-no answer. If you have a current vet, add the clinic phone number: staff do call vet references, and a missing number can add days.
Expect a phone call or email for a follow-up conversation, a reference check, and sometimes a home visit or a video call. Popular animals can draw several applications at once, so timing matters: faxing early in the day, then calling to confirm receipt, puts your file in front of staff before the next batch arrives. Keep your copy of the application and the fax confirmation together. If staff say they never got it, you can re-fax the same pages without starting over, and the confirmation shows when the first attempt went out.
Do not include payment card details on an adoption application fax unless the shelter specifically asks for a deposit by fax, which is rare and worth verifying by phone first. Adoption fees are usually paid in person or through a secure link after approval. Also leave out extra documents the shelter did not request, such as long vet histories or photos of your home, unless the form invites them. A short, complete application is easier for a busy volunteer to review than a thick packet with the key pages buried in the middle.
LetterAgent fax is available in testing for US and Canadian fax numbers only. You describe the fax to your AI assistant, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe. Because fax is still in testing, check availability before you rely on it for an animal with a short adoption window. A fax confirmation proves the pages went out; it does not guarantee approval, and the shelter decision still follows its own review steps.
