Can I fax a permit application?

Sometimes, but only if the issuing office says it takes permit applications by fax, and many now use an online portal or a counter instead. A faxed application with missing plans, fees, or signatures will sit unprocessed, so confirm the intake route, the full attachment list, and the payment method before you send anything.

Permit offices are paper-heavy by nature. A building permit may need drawings, a site plan, a contractor licence number, and proof of insurance. A business permit may need zoning details and a floor plan. Fax handles the short form well and the drawing set badly: large sheets shrink to letter size, fine lines vanish, and dimensions become guesswork. That is why many offices that still accept faxes limit them to renewals, simple applications, or supporting pages, while new construction goes through a portal or the counter.

What should you confirm before faxing?

Call or check the office website for four facts: the fax number for permit intake (not a general office fax), whether faxed applications are accepted for your permit type, what fee payment must accompany the fax, and how you will know the application was received and logged. Fee payment is the step people miss most. A fax cannot carry a cheque, so offices that accept faxed applications usually want a card payment by phone, a payment through a portal, or a separate mailed cheque with a note tying it to the fax. If you fax the form and no one can charge the fee, the file may wait in a pile until someone asks about it.

Signatures are the second trap. Some offices accept a signed faxed form as an original for intake, then ask for a wet signature later. Others require an original signature on file before they issue anything. Ask which rule applies, and do not assume a faxed signature counts as the final one.

How do you make a faxed application readable?

What differs between the United States and Canada?

In the United States, permits are issued at city or county level, so there is no single national rule. A small town office may still take faxes gladly, while a large city has moved everything to a portal with uploads for drawings. In Canada, permits run through municipalities too, with provinces setting building code rules above them. The same split shows up: smaller municipalities may accept faxes, larger cities usually want portal uploads, especially for plans that need review by several departments. In both countries, the office's own intake page beats any general guide, including this one.

Timing also differs by place. Some offices stamp an application on the day it arrives by fax, which can matter for a deadline or a construction start date. Others stamp only complete applications, so a fax missing one attachment does not start the clock. Ask which rule your office follows, and get the answer in writing if a date matters to your project.

How can LetterAgent faxing help here?

You send a fax by asking your AI assistant. You get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, you approve the exact total, you pay once through Stripe, and the fax is sent. Only US and Canadian fax numbers are supported, and there are no inbound faxes. Fax through LetterAgent is in testing, so treat any fax plan as tentative until your assistant confirms it can send, and confirm receipt with the permit office yourself, since a fax confirmation page proves transmission, not acceptance of the application.
