Can I fax a job application?

You can, and some employers list a fax number in the posting: small businesses, medical offices, schools, and local government offices are the most likely. Treat the cover sheet as your first impression, since it is the first page the hiring manager sees. Fax a PDF of your resume and cover letter, then follow up to confirm it arrived legibly.

Which employers still accept faxed applications?

If the posting lists both an email address and a fax number, either works: pick the one you can confirm was received. If it lists only a fax number, that's the employer's preferred channel, and using it is a small early signal that you follow instructions. Don't overthink the technology choice: the employer told you how they want applications, and matching that matters more than the channel's age.

What goes on the cover sheet?

FieldWhat to writeWhy it matters
Your name and contact infoName, phone, emailIt's the first page the hiring manager sees
PositionThe exact job title from the postingOffices hiring for several roles sort by this
Page count"3 pages including cover sheet"A missing page gets noticed instead of silently lost
One-line note"Resume and cover letter attached for [title]"Frames what follows before they've read a word

The cover sheet is your first impression in a way email never is. With email, the hiring manager sees your resume first; with fax, they see the cover sheet first. Keep it clean and professional: this page sets the tone before a single line of your resume has been read. A sloppy cover sheet on top of a great resume still reads as sloppy.

How do I avoid the classic faxed-resume mistakes?

Fax in black and white from a clean PDF: that's the single biggest quality lever you have. Tiny fonts, light gray text, and shaded boxes turn into unreadable smudges after transmission, so use a simple layout with dark text on white and reasonable type sizes. Faxing is a fixed, fairly coarse resolution: design for it.

Never fax a photo of a printed resume taken with your phone. Phone photos add shadows, skew, and blur on top of the fax's own quality loss, and the result can be genuinely unreadable. Scan the pages or export straight to PDF instead. And keep the resume tight: long resumes get skimmed on screen and abandoned on paper, and nobody re-reads a six-page fax.

Can LetterAgent fax my job application?

LetterAgent's fax service is currently in testing. You ask your AI assistant to fax the application, get a per-fax quote with the page count verified, approve the exact total, and pay once through Stripe. It sends to US and Canadian fax numbers only and doesn't receive faxes. As with any fax, follow up with the employer to confirm it arrived legibly: testing phase or not, confirming receipt is on you.
