Can I fax a DEA Form 224 registration application?

No. The DEA does not process registration applications by fax. You must apply online or mail the signed paper application with the fee; a faxed Form 224 cannot be returned to you for processing because the DEA needs your original signature. Faxing the form wastes your time. Use one of the two real paths instead.

Application pathDoes it work? What to know
Online applicationYes, the preferred pathComplete the form on the DEA's registration site; no wet signature needed
Mail the paper Form 224YesOriginal signature required; include the registration fee by check or money order
Fax the formNoMay be faxed only under special circumstances, but the DEA cannot return it for processing; original signature and fee must go by mail

What does "special circumstances" mean, then?

The DEA's own instructions acknowledge that an application may be faxed under special circumstances, but that sentence is narrower than it looks. It describes emergency or unusual situations where the DEA agrees to look at a faxed copy, and it comes with the hard caveat: the copy cannot be returned for processing. Processing requires the original signature and the fee, which only mail can carry. So the fax might buy you a conversation with a registration analyst, but it never buys you a registration.

Why is the original signature non-negotiable?

A DEA registration authorizes the holder to handle controlled substances. The original signature is the agency's basic identity control: it proves the applicant personally signed, and it creates a prosecutable paper trail if the registration is misused. A faxed signature is a photocopy of a signature; for an agency that polices forged prescriptions, that distinction is the whole point.

What about renewals and changes?

Renewals follow the same rule. You can renew online or by mailing the renewal form with the fee. Address changes, business-name changes, and surrenders have their own forms and their own signature requirements, and none of them are fax-processable either. The online system handles most of these changes faster than mail, so there is rarely a reason to fax even for speed.

Can I fax anything else to the DEA?

Routine correspondence, theft and loss reports on Form 106, and inventory questions can travel by fax to the right DEA field office, since those are communications, not applications. But registrations (Form 224), distributor registrations (Form 225), and researcher registrations (Form 225a) all need the original-signed path. When in doubt, check the instructions on the specific form: if it says original signature, the fax machine stays off.

A note on LetterAgent here

Honesty matters more than a pitch: LetterAgent sends outbound faxes to US and Canadian numbers, and it is currently in testing, so this DEA workflow would be a bad fit even if the DEA accepted faxed applications. This one needs your original signature on paper, sent by mail. If you do need the cover letter or a related document sent to a US or Canadian fax number by fax, that is the kind of job fax services handle.
