My fax says "no answer." What should I do?

"No answer" means your machine dialed, the line rang, and nothing on the other end picked up as a fax machine. The fastest diagnostic is a voice call to the same number: if a person answers, if voicemail answers, or if it rings forever, you have learned more in thirty seconds than another fax retry will teach you.

Why would a fax line not answer?

The classic causes are all on the receiving side. The machine may be switched off or unplugged over a weekend, which sounds trivial until it explains half of all "no answer" failures. It may be out of paper or toner: many machines refuse to answer incoming calls when they cannot print, because accepting a fax they cannot put on paper creates a worse problem. Auto-answer may be turned off, with the machine sitting in manual or telephone mode waiting for someone to press a button. Or the line may be shared with voice calls, and the phone rang unanswered because nobody was there to trigger the fax. None of these are problems you can fix from the sending side, which is exactly why the voice call comes first.

Could the number be wrong even if I copied it carefully?

Yes, and it happens more than people admit. A single transposed digit in the area code sends your fax to a stranger's line that rings forever. Long-distance prefixes are another trap: a U.S. number dialed from a Canadian machine (or vice versa) needs the country code, and without it the call may route nowhere. Toll-free fax numbers sometimes block calls from certain carriers. If your machine lets you redial from a stored one-touch number, try typing the digits manually instead; stored numbers go stale when offices change lines. And if you pulled the number from a website, confirm it with the recipient, because fax numbers published online are frequently years out of date.

What if the voice call hears fax tones but my fax still fails?

Then the line is fine and the failure is in the handshake. Try again at a lower transmission speed: most machines let you drop to a slower rate, which survives noisy lines that choke at full speed. Turn off any "overseas mode" or, conversely, turn it on if the number is international. Check that your own machine has enough memory for the job, because some machines abort with misleading errors when they run out mid-send. If it fails repeatedly at different times of day, the recipient's machine may be answering too late in the ring cycle, after your machine has already given up; the recipient can shorten their rings-to-answer setting.

How is "no answer" different from a busy signal?

A busy signal means the line was engaged when you called, which points to a machine that is on but occupied, or a voice call in progress on a shared line. "No answer" means the line was free and rang out. The distinction matters for retry strategy: a busy line is worth retrying automatically, while "no answer" almost always needs human investigation first. Retrying a "no answer" number ten times will not wake up an unplugged machine.
