Home > Guides > Fax busy signal
Wait a few minutes and try again: a busy signal means the receiving machine is on another call, not that your fax failed. Fax machines and online fax services retry a few times before giving up. If the line stays busy for hours, check the number, then call the recipient to ask whether their fax line is working.
A few minutes between attempts is the norm: the other machine may be mid-call with someone else's fax, and a fax call can run several minutes for a long document. Machines that auto-retry usually space attempts minutes apart and stop after a handful of tries. Hammering the number every thirty seconds does not help: it just queues your call behind the same busy line.
| What you hear or see | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Busy tone | Line in use: try again later |
| Rings with no answer | Machine off, unplugged, or set to manual answer |
| Fast busy after dialing | Wrong number or line trouble |
| Error code on the report | Line-quality problem: check the machine's code list |
A busy signal that lasts all day points to a different problem: a number that changed, a machine left off the hook, or a line shared with a voice phone that never switches to fax. That is when the voice call matters.
Dialed digits first: one wrong digit reaches a stranger's line, which may be busy for reasons that have nothing to do with your recipient. Check the area code too: US and Canadian numbers share the same dialing plan, but a missing or extra 1 can still misroute a call from some phone systems. Then confirm the recipient's fax number from their own form or site, not from an old note.
A line busy for days usually means the number changed, the machine is off, or the line is shared with a voice phone that never switches to fax mode. At that point the voice call is not a courtesy, it is the fix: the recipient may not know their fax line is down. Ask for an alternate fax number or another route, such as a secure upload or a different office location, and note the date you switched routes.
LetterAgent's fax service is in testing, with activation still in progress. You describe the fax to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and pay once through Stripe. It handles US and Canadian fax numbers only, and it cannot receive faxes. A busy receiving line behaves the same way no matter which service sends the fax: wait, retry, and call the recipient if the line stays busy.
