Canada Post Expedited Parcel vs Purolator Ground: what's the difference?

Both are economy tracked ground services and both are workhorses for Canadian sellers. Expedited Parcel usually wins on price when you ship through a business account or a discounted platform; Purolator Ground often fits better for business-to-business shipments and scheduled pickups. Honest note: LetterAgent sells Xpresspost labels only, so this guide answers the general question.

What is each service, really?

Expedited Parcel is Canada Post's discounted business-tier parcel service: tracked, with delivery confirmation, moving on the postal network to every address type in the country, including PO boxes. It is the service behind most "free shipping" offers from Canadian online stores. Purolator Ground is Purolator's standard tracked ground service, running on Purolator's own driver and depot network, with particular strength in business-to-business deliveries and corridors between major cities. (Purolator sits in the Canada Post group of companies, which is why the two often get compared: they are siblings with different networks.)

Why do the prices look so different at the counter?

Because the counter is the most expensive place to buy either label. Expedited Parcel bought at a retail counter, at walk-in rates, can price out near Xpresspost; the same label through a business account or a shipping platform with negotiated rates costs far less. Purolator Ground has the same two-tier shape: full price at a retail counter, meaningfully cheaper through platforms and accounts. This is why sellers who quote "the Purolator price" from a one-off counter visit get a distorted picture. Almost nobody who ships regularly buys at the counter.

Which handles pickups and rural addresses better?

For pickups, Purolator's scheduled pickups are built for businesses shipping daily from one location, and the driver's arrival window is part of the account setup. Canada Post's home pickup works for smaller shippers and carries a flat fee per pickup, which suits irregular schedules. For rural addresses, Canada Post's universal service obligation is the deciding factor: one rate structure everywhere, no remote surcharge. Purolator publishes extended-area postal code lists, and rural stops on those lists carry surcharges that can change the economics of a "cheap" label.

When would you pick neither?

When speed matters, step up to Xpresspost or an express courier service instead of stretching an economy label past what it promises. When the item is flat, thin, and light, check whether it qualifies as lettermail instead of a parcel: the cheapest parcel is the one you never buy. And when the item is valuable, add signature and coverage on whichever service you pick, because economy tracking tells you where it is, not who took it.
