Mail a separate dispute letter to each bureau reporting the error (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion), identifying the item by account name and number and explaining what is wrong. Bureaus require copies of your ID and proof of address enclosed, which LetterAgent cannot add (letters only, no inserts), so plan to assemble the packet yourself. The bureau has 30 days to investigate.
This is general information, not legal advice.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| The dispute letter | Identify each error by account name and number, state what is wrong and why, and say what correction you want |
| Copy of government ID | Driver's license or passport: proves you are the person disputing |
| Proof of address | Utility bill or bank statement from the last couple of months |
| Supporting documents | Copies (never originals) of anything proving the error: payment records, court documents, creditor letters |
| A marked-up report copy | Circle or highlight the disputed items on a copy of your credit report |
Because the bureaus do not share dispute outcomes with each other. Fixing an error at Equifax does nothing at Experian or TransUnion: the same wrong item can sit on the other two files indefinitely. Pull all three reports, check each one, and mail a separate packet to every bureau that shows the error. Each bureau publishes its dispute mailing address on its website; use the current one, not one from an old blog post.
The bureau generally has about 30 days to investigate. It forwards your dispute to the furnisher (the creditor or collector that reported the item), which must review it and report back. Then the bureau sends you the results in writing, plus a free copy of your report if the dispute changed anything. If the item is deleted or corrected, that is the end of it.
If the bureau comes back with "verified," do not accept that as the final word. You have the right to ask for the method of verification: the bureau must tell you how it checked. You can also add a brief consumer statement (around 100 words) to your file explaining your side, which future reviewers will see. And if a bureau is ignoring a legitimate dispute, a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau gets executive-level attention fast.
Only part of it. LetterAgent can print and mail the dispute letter itself, but bureaus require copies of your ID and proof of address enclosed with it, and LetterAgent mails letters only, no inserts. For a credit dispute, the practical route is to assemble the full packet yourself and mail it with tracking, so every required enclosure travels together.
