What is the cheapest way to ship a heavy package in Canada?

LetterAgent cannot help here if your parcel is over 5 kg, since its Xpresspost labels cap at 5 kg, but for heavy parcels, the cheapest option is usually a flat-rate or weight-banded parcel service with drop-off, sent within your region rather than across the country. Compare the postal service, regional couriers, and freight services on the same weight and box size, because the cheapest carrier flips as weight climbs.

Why does the cheapest carrier change with weight?

Parcel pricing has bands, and each carrier draws its bands differently. A carrier that wins at 2 kg can lose badly at 15 kg, because its per-kilo rate past a threshold jumps. Canada Post parcel pricing, courier pricing, and regional carrier pricing each reward different shapes of shipment: one favours small dense boxes, another favours large light ones, and a third prices mainly by distance. The only reliable comparison uses your actual box weight and dimensions, not the carrier headline rate.

Distance matters as much as weight. A parcel travelling within one province often costs far less than the same parcel crossing the country, and some regional carriers only serve their home region at a discount. If your recipient is nearby, a regional courier or a bus-freight parcel service can beat national pricing by a lot. For cross-country heavy parcels, consolidated freight or a courier account rate sometimes beats retail counter pricing.

How do I cut the billed weight?

Carriers bill by the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is a formula from the box size. A heavy item in an oversized box gets billed as if it were heavier than it is. Repack into the smallest sturdy box that fits, with just enough padding to protect the contents. Removing retail packaging, manuals, and extra inserts can drop a parcel into a lower band, and for dense items, a flat-rate box removes the dimensional-weight question entirely.

Split shipments are worth pricing too. Two medium parcels sometimes cost less than one very heavy parcel, because the heaviest band carries a surcharge. Compare both ways before you seal the box. Also check whether the recipient can pick up from a depot: some carriers price depot pickup below home delivery, and the saving grows with weight.

What about insurance and tracking?

Heavy parcels are more likely to be dropped, and a damaged heavy item costs more to replace. Included liability on standard parcel services is limited, so compare the declared-value coverage before choosing on price alone. Tracking is standard on most parcel services now, but confirm it for regional and freight options, since a cheap uninsured heavy shipment that goes missing is no bargain.

For parcels up to 5 kg within Canada, a Canada Post Xpresspost label through LetterAgent is one option: describe the parcel to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, and get the label PDF. Anything heavier needs a carrier or freight quote outside that label.
