It depends on timing. Most online fax services let you cancel a fax while it is still sitting in the queue, before the first dial attempt. Once the call connects and pages start transmitting, the fax cannot be pulled back. On a physical machine, the red Stop button only helps during dialing. Act fast.
Often, yes, if you catch it in the first minute or two. Online fax services hold your document in a send queue before the first dial attempt, and most give you a Cancel button next to any fax whose status reads queued, pending, or scheduled. Once the status flips to sending or transmitting, cancellation is over. The pages are already traveling down the phone line, and there is no recall command in the fax protocol.
Two things people get wrong here. First, closing the browser tab or the app does not cancel the fax. The queue lives on the provider's server, not on your screen, so walking away from the tab changes nothing. You have to use the provider's cancel control, usually in the sent or history view. Second, a failed fax is not the same as a canceled one. Many services automatically retry a busy or unanswered number for several hours unless you explicitly cancel the job, which means a fax you thought died can still go through later. If the number was wrong, cancel the retries too.
| Fax status | Can you cancel it? |
|---|---|
| Queued or pending | Yes, this is your window |
| Scheduled for later | Yes, up until the send time |
| Sending or transmitting | No, pages are already going through |
| Failed (will retry) | Yes, cancel to stop the retries |
| Completed | No, it has been delivered |
A traditional machine gives you a red Stop button, and it works only during dialing. If you press it while the machine is still calling the number, the job dies before anything transmits. Some machines also let you clear the job from a small memory list. But once the handshake tones finish and the first page starts scanning through, stopping the machine only interrupts the remaining pages. Anything already sent is already printed on the other end.
One drastic option: unplugging the phone line kills the transmission instantly. It is the nuclear version of the Stop button. It does not recall the pages that already arrived, and the recipient may get a partial document that looks complete. Treat it as damage control, not a clean cancel.
No. The receiving machine or online service accepts whatever arrives. The recipient can throw the pages away, but they cannot reach into the phone line and block the rest. If you faxed the wrong document, your only real move is a phone call: explain the mistake, ask them to destroy or ignore the pages, and send a corrected version with a clear cover note. For anything with legal weight, like a contract signature or a court filing, note the error in writing the same day.
Most cancelable faxes never needed to be sent. Preview the document before you confirm, the way you would proofread an envelope address. Double-check the fax number digit by digit, because a single wrong digit sends your pages to a stranger with no undo. If the document is long, send a cover sheet first and wait for the recipient to confirm they are ready, especially for time-sensitive filings. And when a service offers a confirmation page or delivery report, turn it on: it will not stop a mistake, but it tells you immediately whether the wrong number actually received it.
With LetterAgent, fax is currently in testing: you approve the exact quoted total before anything sends, so the quote-and-approve step is your natural cancel window. Once you approve and the fax goes out to a US or Canadian number, it cannot be recalled.
