What is Canada Post's Home Pickup service?

Canada Post's Home Pickup lets you book a courier to collect up to three labeled parcels from your door on a chosen business day, for a flat fee. You schedule it in the Canada Post app, the driver scans each package at your door, and tracking starts immediately. It is currently available in select areas only, so check the app for your address.

How does Home Pickup actually work?

You prepare your parcels exactly as if you were dropping them off: box them, weigh them, print the shipping label, stick it on. Then, instead of driving to a post office, you open the Canada Post app, pick a date, and tell it how many items you have. On the scheduled day, the delivery agent scans each package at your door. That scan is the moment tracking starts, which matters if anything goes wrong later: the package is in Canada Post's system from your doorstep, not from whenever it reaches a sorting plant.

This is part of Canada Post's broader modernization push. The corporation has lost billions since 2018 and is rebuilding around e-commerce: weekend parcel delivery in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto, box-free and label-free returns with select retailers, flat rate boxes. Home Pickup is the outbound leg of that strategy, aimed at people who ship occasionally and at small sellers who do not generate enough volume for a recurring commercial pickup.

What can be picked up, and what can't?

EligibleNot eligible
Parcels with prepaid Canada Post shipping labels; flat rate boxes (postage prepaid); prepaid return parcels Unlabeled items (nothing can be labeled at your door); regular letters and lettermail; items from other carriers; more than 3 items per request

The prepaid-label rule is the one that trips people up. The driver does not bring postage, labels, or a scale. If your label is wrong (underpaid weight, wrong destination), that problem surfaces later, not at pickup. Make the label first with Canada Post's Find a Rate or Ship Online tool, and tape the label flat so the barcode scans cleanly.

What does it cost, and when is it worth it?

The fee is a flat amount per pickup, plus tax, and it covers up to three parcels. That makes the math simple: one pickup for three parcels costs the same as one pickup for a single parcel. If you ship a few packages a month, batching them into one pickup day costs less than three post-office trips in fuel and time. If you ship exactly one package a month, dropping it off yourself is probably cheaper.

Two scheduling details worth knowing. Pickups happen on business days only: no Saturdays, Sundays, or statutory holidays, and no same-day bookings. And if your plans change, you cannot edit a booking in the app; you must cancel it before 7 a.m. on the scheduled day and rebook from scratch. Miss that cutoff and the driver comes to your door for nothing.

Is Home Pickup available at my address?

Probably, if you live in a city; probably not yet, if you are rural. Canada Post publishes a coverage map, but the shading only shows eligible areas, not guaranteed availability: only select postal codes inside the shaded regions are eligible. The definitive check happens in the app, which validates the address saved in your profile.

There is a wrinkle for apartment and condo dwellers. The driver picks up from your home, but in buildings with controlled entry or concierge desks, you still need to hand the items to the driver on the scheduled date. If you cannot be home, the pickup fails, and you rebook. It is a pickup, not a portal to the mailroom.
