What is Canada Post FlexDelivery?

FlexDelivery is a free Canada Post service that gives you a personal parcel-receiving address at a post office of your choice. Parcels addressed to it are held for pickup instead of landing on your doorstep, which suits apartment dwellers, porch-piracy victims, and anyone with an unreliable home address.

QuestionAnswer
What does it cost?Free for personal use
What do you get?A unique address (your name + the post office's address + a unit-style identifier) that receives parcels for you
Which carriers work with it?Canada Post only; parcels from UPS, FedEx, and other couriers do not route to a FlexDelivery address
How do you know a parcel arrived?Canada Post notifies you and holds the item at the counter for pickup
Can businesses use it?It is designed for individuals, not as a business receiving address

How do I set it up?

You register on the Canada Post website, pick the post office location you want to collect from, and receive your FlexDelivery address. From then on, you use that address as the shipping address when you order online. There is no key and no box to rent; it is simply an address that funnels your parcels to one counter. When a parcel arrives, Canada Post sends you a notification and holds it for pickup within the posted hold window. Bring ID that matches the name on the parcel.

Who benefits most?

Three groups get the most value. Apartment and condo residents whose buildings have nowhere safe for parcels. People in neighbourhoods with porch piracy, where a parcel on the step is a parcel at risk. And anyone whose home address is hard to deliver to: rural routes, new subdivisions the GPS does not know yet, or basement suites with confusing numbering. If your parcels keep ending up at the wrong door, a FlexDelivery address removes the address from the equation entirely.

It also helps online shoppers who split time between two places. Pick the post office near where you actually are, and the parcels wait for you there.

What are the catches?

The big one is carrier coverage. FlexDelivery only accepts parcels carried by Canada Post. Many online stores ship with Canada Post by default, but some use couriers, and a courier parcel addressed to your FlexDelivery address will not find its way there. Before you rely on the address for an order, check which carrier the store uses. This is also why FlexDelivery pairs naturally with Canada Post shipping labels: a LetterAgent Xpresspost label addressed to someone's FlexDelivery address works exactly as intended.

The second catch is size. Oversized items that do not fit the post office's parcel handling may be refused or redirected, so do not point a furniture delivery at it. The third is timing: pickup requires the post office to be open, and hold windows are limited, so a parcel that arrives right before a long weekend needs you to show up promptly. Finally, the address is tied to the specific location you chose. If you pick the post office near your office and then change jobs, update it.

How is it different from a PO box?

A PO box is a rented, locked compartment for mail of all kinds, and it costs money. FlexDelivery is free, handles parcels specifically, and routes to the pickup counter rather than a box. A PO box also accepts anything Canada Post delivers, while FlexDelivery is purpose-built for parcels. If you mostly need a safe place for packages, FlexDelivery does the job without the rental fee. If you need a permanent mailing address for letters too, a PO box is the better fit.
