Sept-Iles, Quebec and Winnipeg, Manitoba are the first places converting from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in October 2026, with Etobicoke, Ontario and Moncton and Riverview, New Brunswick following in November. If your street is on the list, Canada Post notifies you months ahead and hands out keys before the switch.
| When | Communities converting | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Sept-Iles, Que.; Winnipeg, Man. | First conversions under the program (about 16,000 addresses in Winnipeg, 7,000 in Sept-Iles) |
| November 2026 | Etobicoke, Ont.; Moncton and Riverview, N.B. | Next wave announced in the September 2026 release |
| Late 2026 into early 2027 | 13 communities total, including Ottawa, La Prairie and Candiac, Abbotsford, Mission, and North Vancouver | About 136,000 addresses in the initial phase |
| 2027 and beyond | Cornwall and South Stormont, Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Rupert named for 2027 | Full program: about four million addresses over roughly five years |
Canada Post says it has accumulated billions in losses since 2018, and the federal government has endorsed a restructuring plan. Converting the roughly four million addresses that still get door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes is expected to save hundreds of millions a year. Nearly three in four Canadian addresses already receive mail through some form of centralized delivery, so the program mostly extends a system most Canadians already use.
The rollout is phased, not instant. Canada Post consults with municipalities before converting each neighbourhood, and it says converting a single address "typically takes months." Startup-phase areas were picked because they sit next to neighbourhoods that already have community mailboxes. Dense urban cores are the hardest logistically and will be converted in the later stages, so if you live in a downtown condo corridor, your switch is years off, not months.
You get a locked personal compartment in a shared mailbox unit, with its own key. The unit also holds parcel compartments: when a parcel arrives, the carrier leaves the parcel-compartment key in your personal slot. More than four in five Canada Post parcels fit in an individual or parcel compartment. Oversized parcels and anything requiring a signature still come to your door or are held for pickup at a nearby post office.
The practical adjustments are small but real. You walk to the mailbox instead of the door. Mail pickup hours become any time of day, since the unit is accessible around the clock. Your address does not change: the conversion is a delivery method change, not an address change. But keep your address current with your bank, employer, and government accounts anyway, because that is how Canada Post reaches you with conversion notices and key distribution instructions. If you move within the converted area, the compartment key is handled through Canada Post, not your landlord.
This is what the Delivery Accommodation Program exists for. It is free, and more than eighteen thousand households across the country already use some form of it. Accommodations can include a sliding tray, Braille features, a compartment assigned at a more reachable height, or, in some cases, continued home delivery on a temporary, seasonal, or permanent basis.
Apply through canadapost.ca/accessibility or call 1-844-454-3009. Do it as soon as you get your conversion notice, not after the switch: accommodations take time to set up, and the program works best when it is arranged before your door delivery stops. If you have a disability or mobility limitation, you do not have to accept a mailbox you cannot reach; the accommodation is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
