You can, but light pencil often drops out of the scan and arrives faint, patchy, or missing entirely. The fix is to darken the page before sending: crank the density or contrast setting on the machine, write with a darker pencil, or photocopy the page with the density turned up and fax the copy instead of the original.
Graphite sits on the page as a thin gray film, not the dense black of ink or toner. A fax scanner decides each spot is black or white based on a contrast threshold, and light pencil hovers right around that line: some strokes cross it, some do not, and the result is broken, ghostly writing. A standard HB pencil used with a light hand is the worst case. A soft 2B pencil pressed firmly lays down far more graphite and scans dramatically better, which is why two pencil notes can fax so differently.
| What you do | Effect on the fax |
|---|---|
| Fax the pencil original at normal settings | Often faint or patchy; light strokes vanish |
| Set density/contrast darker before faxing | Pushes more strokes over the threshold; page background may gray |
| Photocopy with density up, fax the copy | Best result; the copier boosts contrast before the fax ever sees it |
| Trace over the writing in pen first | Guaranteed readable, but alters the original document |
Almost every fax machine and all-in-one has a density, darkness, or contrast control, often buried under Copy or Fax settings. Turning it darker lowers the threshold, so the scanner counts lighter marks as black. For pencil, set it two or three notches darker than normal and send a test page to yourself or a friendly recipient first. Go too far and the paper texture itself starts printing as gray noise, which is why the photocopy route is usually cleaner: the copier does the boosting, and the fax machine can stay on its normal setting.
The same physics, one step removed. If you photograph or scan a pencil page and upload it, the scan that digitizes the page is where the pencil either survives or dies. Scan at high contrast (most scanner apps have a "document" or "black and white" mode that does exactly this), check the preview, and only then send. A phone photo taken in warm indoor light is the classic failure: the pencil looks fine on your screen and arrives as a blank page.
With LetterAgent, you describe the fax to your AI assistant and approve the exact quoted price before it is sent to US and Canadian fax numbers. Fax is currently available in testing, so send times are not guaranteed, and there is no inbound fax. For a pencil original, the practical advice stands: darken a copy first, then send the copy.
