No: not as an individual. Only licensed cannabis retailers and licensed producers can ship cannabis by mail in Canada, and it must go through approved carriers with mandatory age verification at delivery. If you are a regular person, mailing cannabis yourself is illegal. LetterAgent cannot help with this: our shipping labels are Canada-only Xpresspost for ordinary parcels, and we do not handle cannabis at all.
This is general information, not legal advice.
| Who you are | Can you mail cannabis? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed retailer or producer | Yes, within your province's rules | Through carriers set up for it, with adult signature and ID check at delivery |
| Medical patient | You can order it, not mail it | Licensed medical sellers ship to you; you cannot forward or resell by mail |
| Regular individual | No | Mailing cannabis yourself breaks federal law, even to another adult in Canada |
| Anyone shipping to the US | Never | Cannabis crossing the border is a federal offense on both sides, whatever state law says |
Canada's cannabis law draws a hard line between personal possession and distribution, and putting cannabis in the mail counts as distribution. Legal possession limits (30 grams of dried cannabis in public for adults) describe what you can carry, not what you can ship. The mail system is treated as a commercial channel: only businesses holding a federal or provincial licence may move cannabis through it. This surprises people because gifting cannabis in person is legal in most provinces, but the moment it goes into a mailbox, the rules change completely.
Licensed retailers ship through Canada Post and certain couriers that have specific cannabis-delivery programs. Three things distinguish these shipments from ordinary parcels. First, delivery requires an adult signature: the driver or postal worker checks ID and will not leave the package at the door or with a neighbour. Second, the packaging must be plain and opaque, with no branding or imagery that suggests what is inside. Third, the sender's licence is on file with the carrier: you cannot walk into a post office, declare a cannabis shipment, and get it accepted without that account relationship. Provinces add their own layer: some allow only government-run stores to ship, while others let private licensed retailers do it.
Medical patients have a legal right to buy from licensed medical sellers, who ship directly to the patient's registered address. That shipment is between the licensed seller and the patient: the patient cannot then mail cannabis on to someone else, even another patient. If you are a medical user who needs cannabis somewhere else (a second home, a long trip), the legal move is to order from a licensed seller to that address, not to pack some up and mail it yourself. Growing your own medical cannabis does not grant a mailing right either.
Canada Post's terms prohibit it, and screening catches more of these parcels than people expect: cannabis has a distinctive smell that survives most home packaging, and postal inspectors can and do open suspicious parcels. Consequences range from the parcel being seized and destroyed to criminal charges for trafficking, depending on the amount and circumstances. "It was just a gift for a friend" is not a defense. And mailing cannabis to the United States, even to a state where it is legal, can mean a lifetime ban from entering the US on top of Canadian charges.
No. LetterAgent sells Canada Post Xpresspost shipping labels for ordinary parcels up to 5 kg, and cannabis is excluded. You describe the parcel to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted price, pay once through Stripe, and get your label PDF: that flow covers normal domestic shipments, not controlled products. If you are a licensed retailer, talk to Canada Post directly about their cannabis delivery program.
