Can I ship a hoverboard or self-balancing scooter?

Not with LetterAgent: anything with a battery this size is outside Canada-only Xpresspost labels. The real question is the battery's watt-hour rating, printed on the pack. Most hoverboard packs sit well above small-device thresholds, so carriers want the board shipped by ground with hazmat markings, or the battery removed and the board shipped separately.

How do I find the watt-hour rating?

Check the battery itself. Hoverboard packs are usually tucked under the foot platforms; the label lists the voltage, capacity, and a watt-hour figure. Batteries made after the end of 2011 are required to mark the watt-hour rating on the case. If you only see volts and amp-hours, multiply them (a 36-volt, 4.4-amp-hour pack is about 158 watt-hours). The manual or the manufacturer's spec page lists it too. Typical hoverboard batteries run in the low hundreds of watt-hours: far above the roughly 100-watt-hour line that separates ordinary consumer batteries from the ones carriers treat as dangerous goods.

Should I ship it with the battery or without?

Removing the battery almost always simplifies the shipment. A hoverboard without its pack is just a bulky parcel: box it, protect the corners, and ship it by normal ground service. The catch is that many hoverboard batteries are not designed for casual removal; if the pack is screwed into the chassis and wired in, prying it out is worse than shipping it installed, because you risk damaging the very thing that makes the shipment dangerous. When the pack is removable, ship the battery in a separate box with terminal protection and the lithium-battery mark, and never in the same box as the board unless the carrier's rules explicitly allow that configuration. When the pack is built in, find a ground carrier that takes Class 9 goods and declare it honestly: the package needs the lithium-battery handling mark and, for larger packs, a full dangerous-goods declaration.

What if the hoverboard was recalled?

Check before you ship. Hoverboards had a wave of recalls in the mid-2010s over battery fires, and recalled boards with defective packs are refused by legitimate carriers outright: a known-defective battery is not shippable as ordinary dangerous goods either. The recall remedy was usually a free repair or replacement through the manufacturer, and manufacturers arrange the return shipping themselves through their own hazmat contracts. If you are buying a used board, the flip side applies: ask for the brand and model and check the recall lists before money changes hands. And never ship a swollen, cracked, or heat-damaged battery: damaged lithium packs are forbidden in every mail and parcel stream, and belong at a battery recycling drop-off instead.
