Can you fax to a cell phone number?

No, you cannot fax to a plain cell phone number, because a cell phone has no fax machine to answer the call and print the pages. The fax signal needs a fax machine or a fax service number. A fax-to-mobile app gives the recipient a fax number that delivers to their phone instead.

Why does a cell phone fail as a fax destination?

A fax call is not a voice call. When a fax machine dials a number, it expects the other end to answer with a fax tone, then the two machines agree on speed and page settings before any page moves. A cell phone answers as a voice device, or goes to voicemail, and neither can return a fax tone or receive pages. The sending machine hears no fax answer, tries again a few times, and then reports a failed send. The phone owner gets no pages, no file, and usually no sign that a fax was even attempted, unless they see a missed call from an unknown number.

Dual-purpose numbers add confusion. A business may list one number for voice and fax, with a machine that answers voice calls by day and fax tones by night, or a person who answers and then switches the line to a fax machine. That setup works because a fax machine sits behind the number. A personal cell phone with no fax machine behind it does not work, no matter how many times the sender retries.

What does a fax-to-mobile app do instead?

A fax app gives the user a real fax number, hosted by the app provider, that accepts incoming faxes and turns them into files the user opens on their phone. When you fax to that app number, the provider machine answers with a fax tone, receives the pages, converts them to a document file, and notifies the phone owner. The phone itself never handles the fax signal; the provider server does. That is why the recipient must set up the app and share its fax number, not their personal cell number.

Check the app number before you send anything sensitive. Ask the recipient to read the fax number from inside the app, rather than trusting a number from an old email signature. App numbers can change when a subscription lapses, and a fax sent to a lapsed number may fail or, worse, reach a different subscriber if the number was reassigned. A quick confirmation message costs little and prevents a privacy slip.

What if I only have the person cell number?

Ask for their fax number or an email address, and explain why. Most people who need a faxed document can give a work fax number, a clinic fax number, or a fax app number once they know the cell number will not work. If the document is not legally required to arrive by fax, email or a secure file link is simpler and gives the recipient a file they can actually open on their phone. A scanned PDF by email beats a failed fax every time.

Be wary of services that claim to fax "to any phone number." They usually mean they send a text message with a link, or they fax to a number the recipient set up elsewhere. That may be fine for a casual document, but it is not a fax to the cell number itself, and it should not be used for health, legal, or financial documents without checking how the link is protected and how long it stays live.

Can I receive faxes on my own cell phone?

Yes, through a fax app or an online fax service, not through your carrier cell number. Sign up with a provider, pick a fax number in your area code when offered, and share that number as your fax number. Incoming faxes arrive as files you can view, save, or forward. Keep the provider account active, since a lapsed number can be reassigned, and check the provider privacy terms before receiving health or legal documents through it.

One practical warning: fax app notifications can be easy to miss among other phone alerts. If you expect an important fax, tell the sender when to send it and check the app inbox directly, rather than waiting for a push notification that may be silenced. For time-sensitive documents, a follow-up call to confirm receipt beats trusting a notification alone.

What about texting a photo of a document instead?

A photo by text is often the fastest workaround, and for many everyday purposes it works. It is not a fax, though, and it does not carry the same weight when a recipient specifically asked for a fax. Some offices require a fax because their workflow files faxed pages into a record system, and a texted photo may never reach that system. When an office says "fax only," ask for their fax number and use a fax route, rather than assuming a photo will be accepted.

Can LetterAgent fax to a cell phone number?

LetterAgent fax is available in testing for US and Canadian fax numbers, with a per-fax quote, page count verified, your approval of the exact total, and a one-time Stripe payment. That testing service sends to fax numbers, not to plain cell phone numbers, for the same reason any fax service cannot reach a voice-only phone. If the recipient uses a fax app, fax to the app fax number they give you, and confirm it before sending anything sensitive.
