Yes, international faxing works from most fax machines and many online fax services, but you need to know the right dialing sequence. Be upfront about the limit: LetterAgent covers US and Canadian fax numbers only, so it cannot send your fax to any other country. The rest of this guide covers how international faxing works in general.
The sequence has three parts: your country's exit code (which tells your phone line to leave the domestic network), the destination's country code, then the fax number itself with any leading zero dropped. From the US or Canada, the exit code is 011. So to fax a number in the United Kingdom whose fax line is (0)20 7946 0958, you would dial 011 44 20 7946 0958: 011 to exit, 44 for the UK, then the number without its leading zero. That dropped zero trips people up constantly: it is the domestic trunk prefix, and it does not belong in international dialing. From most other countries, the exit code is 00 instead of 011, which is why you will sometimes see numbers written with a plus sign (for example, +44 20 7946 0958), meaning "insert your local exit code here."
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving the leading zero in | The call reaches a wrong or nonexistent number, or fails to connect | Drop the domestic trunk zero after the country code |
| Forgetting the exit code | The machine treats it as a domestic call and dials garbage | 011 from the US or Canada; 00 from most other countries |
| Faxing at the wrong hour | An unattended machine should still receive, but a line shared with voice may not switch to fax mode after hours | Send during the recipient's business hours in their time zone |
| Too-slow handshake over long distances | Repeated retries, partial pages, or failures on old machines | Lower the machine's baud rate if it allows it, or use an online service whose servers are closer to the destination |
With a traditional machine, yes: it is billed like an international phone call, often per minute, and a multi-page fax across continents can run for several minutes. This is one reason online fax services became popular for cross-border sending: many charge their standard per-page or per-fax price regardless of destination. Not all do, though. Some services add international surcharges per country, and some block certain countries entirely for fraud reasons. Always check the destination coverage list before you pay, because "worldwide" in marketing copy frequently comes with an asterisk.
Sending a fax means placing a real phone call on the public telephone network, and international calls cost the provider money per minute per route. Covering every country on earth means maintaining calling routes and quality for hundreds of destinations, plus dealing with fraud: international fax routes are a classic target for abuse, since a compromised account can rack up premium-rate charges. Providers that keep to a short country list are trading reach for predictable cost and quality. That is exactly the tradeoff LetterAgent has made: US and Canadian fax numbers only, with no inbound faxes, so every destination is a route the service controls end to end.
If the recipient just needs the pages, a scanned email attachment usually wins: free, instant, and color. But some institutions specifically require a fax, often because their intake process is built around it (government agencies, some banks, many medical offices). When fax is mandatory and the destination is outside your service's coverage, your options are a full-coverage online fax service, a local office-supply store with international faxing, or asking the recipient whether an email scan is acceptable after all. The last one is worth trying more often than people do: plenty of "fax required" rules date from an era when email intake did not exist, and the person on the other end may be relieved you asked.
