Can a fax confirm someone read it?

No. A fax confirmation page proves the pages reached the receiving machine or service, not that any person read them. If you need proof that someone read your fax, you need a follow-up call, a reply, or a signed acknowledgement, because fax has no read receipt.

This surprises people because the confirmation page feels authoritative. It lists the number dialed, the time, and the page count, and it says the transmission succeeded. That is real evidence, but it is evidence about the phone call, not about a human being. The receiving machine could have printed the pages into an empty office, or an online service could have filed them into an inbox nobody opened. The confirmation page cannot see past the machine.

What you haveWhat it provesWhat it does not prove
Confirmation pagePages reached the receiving machine or serviceAnyone opened, read, or acted on them
Follow-up callSomeone at the office says they have itThey read every page in full
Written reply or acknowledgementThe recipient responded to the contentsNothing further: this is the strongest proof

Why does fax have no read receipt?

Fax was built in an era when the machine was the destination. The protocol ends when the receiving machine acknowledges the pages, and there is no later step where a person confirms reading. Email added read receipts as an optional extra, and even those are unreliable, since most readers block them. Fax never added one at all. An online fax service can tell you the fax was delivered to an inbox, which is one step further than a machine's printout, but an inbox delivery is still not a read.

This gap matters most for deadlines. Courts, insurers, and government offices often accept a fax confirmation page as proof of sending by a deadline, and that is a fair use of it: it proves you sent the document on time. But proof of sending is not proof of reading, and if the other side later says they never saw it, the confirmation page will not settle that argument. It settles when you sent it, not whether they read it.

What should I do when reading matters?

Build the acknowledgement into the fax itself. Add a short line on the cover page asking the recipient to confirm receipt by phone or email, with your number printed clearly. For anything with legal or financial weight, ask for a signed acknowledgement back, by fax or email, before you treat the matter as closed. A one-line reply saying "received and filed" is worth more than a drawer full of confirmation pages.

Then make the follow-up call. Ask for the person by name, state what you sent and when, and ask whether it reached their desk. Note the name of the person you spoke to, the date, and the time. That note, together with the confirmation page, is the practical record most people actually rely on when a dispute comes up months later.

There is one more trap worth avoiding. A fax that reports partial success, say five pages of six sent, is not a successful fax. The missing page is usually the last one, which is often the signature page. Check the page count on every confirmation report, and resend the full document if the count is short, rather than sending only the missing page, which can be filed separately and lost.

LetterAgent's fax service is currently available in testing for US and Canadian fax numbers, with no inbound faxes. You describe the fax to your AI assistant, approve the exact quoted total, and pay once through Stripe. Fax is still in testing and activation is in progress, so do not treat it as a guaranteed channel for a deadline-critical document.
